ties preparedness and pacifism mobilization how we fight the war Wilson's Fourteen Points his vision for the future and then the Red Scare after the war we are at we already know about the secret way the austrians are allied with the Germans the Italians are on the side of the French and the English and the Russians and then of course the Turks the Ottomans over here going to be fighting on the side of the austrians and the Germans crazy Wilson we know is a progressive Democrat he is going to be very important to his foreign policy is the the concept of moral diplomacy this is what he's known for and if you remember this document that I gave you guys this document one page 3 Woodrow Wilson Legacy there's this chart of his programs all that is very important and then you get his foreign policy start down here right there we went over all the foreign policy elements but you still need to review it and remember it is kind of hard and then the world war stop okay so World War one is over here look for that so you could use this document this is like a study guides very important and then lastly I want to go over Wilson's forum policy issues and that basically what we mean by this is what were his attitudes and then here's one great quote we must shape our course of action by the maxims of justice and Liberty and Goodwill and think of the progress of mankind rather than the progress of this or that investment so he's saying let's be less selfish it would be less selfish we must for the protection of American Auto advancement of American ideals that's a big American ideals should be the director of our foreign policy that's what moral diplomacy and we stand for justice in honor in all of these positive things so this is what we talked about moral diplomacy for and in what way what should be our guiding philosophy let's go back to where we were I want to reinforce this moral diplomacy the reason why this is so important is because it's going to be the outcome of Wilson's plan for the postwar world is going to be this collective security the League of Nations Ron it'll be called the the United Nations right and all of these things are going to be to prevent war and stuff out of the war will someone say let's create a new world order where we all avoid war by by internet cooperation globalization is the biggest expansion of Wilson's ideas in that what does he mean by that he means it means that International cooperation prevents war and improves everyone's lives and that's really what he's looking for and what he's looking to argue for and especially with the 14 points all right let's go on moral diplomacy again he wants to end the big stick policy he wants cooperation and friendship not use of force and that's where the big stick policy is against Secretary of State William Jennings he's member across the goal he is going to resign over Wilson's attitude about the war cuz he sees Wilson kind of wants to get involved and he's going to resign again New World Order United States would never again seek one additional foot of territory and that is a standard isn't it in that the standard of world organization today anywho he saw American influence in the world has a moral Crusade the New World Order would be program of cooperation somebody talkin more morale Americans were meant to carry on Liberty and Justice and principles of humanity wherever and convert them to principles of America I hate this thing was injured about this is a course that's morality if you believe in Liberty and Justice than you have World Civilization morality we have a moral material power to create a new world order nice day this out of this war will create this new world order Civilized Nation working together to see that civilized Nations working together that his new world order we must shape our course of action by the maxims of justice and Liberty and Goodwill think of the progress rather than the progress for this or that Investments against service to humanity an example remember the war starts 1914 Wilson is president he's been president since 1913 he took over what he's arguing is he saying we should remain neutral in mind and in action in our heart we should remain neutral and in the way we behave should we should remain neutral he said it to the public as part of the bully pulpit trying to influence the American to have these attitude but he doesn't do it she he behave totally pro angler which is English he's Pro Britain thing about this is the ethnic concept of neutrality Irish Americans are at least four and a half million of irish-american who hated the British they wanted the Germans to win in 1916 they have an Irish rebellion in Dublin where they end up fighting the British and they get beat and of course but they're angry and they want their independence Irish Americans were hostile to English to think about this for Irish Americans in favor of the British know of the Germans German Americans are eight million their Pro German Anglo Americans are pro English so when they ask you what was America neutral and the answer is they are in favor of the English or the Germans or whoever what are we at how many minutes about 20 minutes so far let's keep going for a little bit longer so American industrialists when's that are that are making millions off of or they're making tons of money are they neutral know they are making money off who's paying and guess who's buying their good is it the Germans that are buying the goods or is it that the Allies the British any answer is look at this the you that the the Allies 1914 169 million dollars trade 1916 $1000000 and trade what's the difference two years of war 1917 27 million in credit was given to the Germans to the allies 124 million 3214000000 to 3 billion in credit so I don't know if you can tell the difference there's a big difference here and so we're Americans neutral and the answer is absolutely not not in money not one right way we talk about neutrality economic neutrality ethnic neutrality know but Wilson says we should remain neutral now here's what the the big idea with the economic ties is all this money who's going to lose if the Allies lose hue has the Americans right look at or we can we afford to lose that much money the loser doesn't pay their debts usually the the winners obtain the resources out of the losers in this very it's not very friendly they just going to take it so what the economic factor is significant because that is going to push and put pressure on the Americans to join the war effort and that's what the reason why we care and again end game for us is how does this relate to World War II are the same issues going to happen or they going to try to solve those problems in the answer is they solve those problems in World War II that we had in World War 1 we won't do any of these loans will have a bunch of these things called Neutrality Acts so pay attention this is part of what we're going to see you know in a couple of days with World War II how did we spend so much money on the war if we were only in it for a year well this is Muddy were loaning this 3 billion point three billion that's money that were giving loans and Credit in and how much trade were getting with the other side does that make sense hello yeah thank you for the big idea with economic ties is not that it cost us money but that it pushes us into the war that's why we care about it all of the way we pay for the war that's another how do we get mobilize and things of that nature that's important we'll get to that in a minute so everybody thinks about Lusitania Lusitania but you know Lusitania was as a steam ocean liner that would luxury liner that was full of weapons and ammunition in when the when it was heading over to England 1915 they they bomb it blows up sinks within minutes thousands are killed or a thousand is kill our killed and we don't end of the war then people always say Lusitania we end of the war no that's not the reason we enter the war but it is a cost to change public opinion everything's about companion I can't the effect Germans apologize Germans comply for short-term cuz I don't want the Americans involved but they end up still going to submarine warfare when they think they're going to win Wilson starts this piece and preparedness program saying well we don't want to be in the war but we might have to get in it we do this again in World War II with FDR in 19 40 he's going to say you know the 39 election 1940 election he will say you know I've I hate War don't want to get in the war we get in 1941 so there's a connection there preparation defense 1916 he kept us out of War slogan that's going to be the same one FDR's going to have a 1940 he went again during the election Wilson at desired for us to take a more active role in international affairs his secret vision for a long-term commitment to building and international structure that would make War Impossible that's called the League of Nations he's thinking about the League of Nations in 1916 so yeah this is why we care about Wilson he is going to lay out a foundation for the future of American foreign policy and collective security and international cooperation all those things are known today as globalization Bentley different is that United States is going to take on this bigger role here's the election we got this terrible Republican loses badly we got eight million to 9 million so it's pretty close but if you can see you've got the we remove the dehumanizing anime again to create propaganda to create a motion to convince people to join the war here's another one the  hound of Germany it's an animal it's a monster it's okay to kill it the Kaiser in the new boats and look at this one Belgium look at look what do you see here you have a poor innocent sing be taken by a monster in a German uniform and you just imagine what happens next so again emotional appeals to get people to support the allies we got the Zimmerman Telegram this is the really great think if you look back if you look back at the map for a minute all of these come we are trying to get allies the British the French the Italians the Russians are trying to get more and more countries involved take the British the French and Italians and the Russians at base movie night they support then the Germans the austrians and the Ottoman Empire down here were in there they were pulled in after the war started and so the United States is going to be just like that we are going to get pulled in by the Allies so here's to a really crazy think the Germans send a note to the Mexicans to Mexico saying if the US enters the war Mexico should declare war on the United States and at the end of the war will give back Texas Arizona and New Mexico back to Mexico of course nobody in Mexico is contemplating me of and it is leaked to the papers hearsay the document and then there's the coded Telegram you're so boring and so a leak the document and that's one more step towards pushing the United States to the war follow okay so we need to do one more unrestricted submarine warfare in the war okay so we're almost done and I appreciate you guys hanging with this hopefully it's useful to some of you I'm going to I'm going to add this one 1970 to the Senate he's suggesting what is a little sad I miss you might hear that look at that night February 17th Zimmerman Telegram 17 the Russian czars overthrown Russian in Russia quits the war March 18-19 17-3 American ships are sunk Wilson calls for special session of Congress April 2nd 97 Wilson asked for war he outlined Germany's abuse has he asked for conscription which means the draft he asked for more credit to the alliance which is money he asked Congress to pay for the war with tax he proclaimed the US would not want to say u.s. would not take any territory to the US did not have hostility toward the is so that we can have a just peace and not have another War well this is a big mistake from World War 1 to World War II because we were very harsh or the Treaty of Versailles was very harsh they determines will want revenge and that's what we get World War II okay so he's forced his far-sighted Provisions kind of like Lincoln with me tordon a charity for all you know that piece and they don't do it and Wilson wanted it it was a precursor Prelude to the 14 points but the 14 points are going to be in all with all of these okay just to know that he's thinking way ahead before the war is even over alright well the last straw unrestricted submarine warfare this is where in 19/7 Germany is getting desperate they want to force a British negotiated peace they announced a new policy unrestricted means no restrictions we're going to hit anything coming across the channel to give me a the Atlantic any ships that are coming across the Atlantic will be attacked and  why they want to strangle England and France and they're going to have a mass of attack in 1917 and what the Germans think is they know the US would enter the war but they thought they can win the war before the Americans get there and if you look again at the app against the Atlantic Ocean they're going to stop everything they can coming into the British Isles in the Europe anyting passenger liner freighter anything is baby sock are they going to try to meet while they're going to rush it just quit the war so now they're transferring all of their troops from the Eastern Front over the Western Front and if they are going to do their best capture for Paris and enough going to be the war's over reality is the Americans come in just in time with millions of fresh troops who are willing to fight and they save basically the French in the from being exhausted can we start you know we enter the war the reason okay get this down at why do we enter the war why because of unrestricted submarine warfare
