all right everybody welcome back 2 AP Psychology motivation and emotion this is lecture discussion number two and we are going to go through as much as we can today we stopped here under categories are types of motives biological factors emotional factors cognitive factors and social factors just know that when you are engaged to the behavior different things motivate you we talked about the biological aspects of homeostasis we talked about their kamiya motional factors how you feel what what reactions you have physiologically also and then cognitive factors thinking makes you behave in certain ways if you think something's important you'll behave in a certain way if it's not important then you won't do it so cognitive factors are things that you think about Etc and Rego social factors other people can motivate motivate us to behave specifically like my daughter keeps texting me anyway I forgot what I was saying what social factors you are you are motivated because the other people or your desire to be with other people Etc so those are all be things that you should be able to see a scenario and say all right this is social Factor this is a cognitive Factor this is these are emotional these are biological basically and be able to briefly describe why and how those things are biological emotional cognitive or social So today we're going to continue with the drive pattern difference between needs and drives a we already talked about this last week okay last time we talked about the incentive value if something has a big reward you are a higher level of motivation primary again motives give me a list of motives which are separate and then secondary motives which are like need for affiliation you could say money might be a secondary motive or it could be an instant also Etc this issue about learned motives that's about most of your Motors according to the behaviorist remember them and I wish I could write on here but I don't know how to I don't have a stylist her behavior behavioral everything is learned to them okay now we haven't done these so we're going to get to those two the drive reduction theory it is where we talked about homeostasis homeostasis again is that biological balance that your body has when your well fed you have you know you're not thirsty and you're a debut no optimal level of arousal mean to your your eyebrows perfectly for whatever situation you're encountering so right now should be calling you shouldn't be too high should be too excited or have anxiety or anxiousness and you shouldn't be asleep and so there's a there's a high level of arousal and there's a low-level we want the optimal which is in the middle now that's call homeostasis when you are happy and fed and don't have thirst and you're comfortable you're attacked equilibrium or a balance of homeostasis now the drive reduction theory suggests that when you go below homeostasis for some reason you're hungry you're thirsty your blood sugar level is low at cetera excetera that's going to motivate you to take food or water or whatever your issue is it's so that's what this is arousal refers your activation of your body and nervous system 0 equals deadhead there's no arousal your dead sleep you're low level of arousal moderate activities like now you're paying attention you should have a moderate level of arousal and when you're let's say fight or flight your sympathetic nervous system is you probably have a higher level of arousal until the problem that you got to have to match the level of arousal to the task to the behavior so if you're running for your life you got to have a high level of arousal if you are studying for a test you can't be overly nervous can't have too much caffeine in it cetera you follow I hope you do decide TriMet if you need to clarify so again we perform best when we have our moderate level of arousal that means we match our task to our arousal level not to pass if not too anxious we call this the inverted-u says that at low levels in this is a key term at low levels of arousal we decrease our performance that makes sense if you're sleepy right or arousal you improve performance depending on the task complexity of the task again if you are a watch repair person in your all nervous or brain surgeon and you're all nervous and you can't hold your can't hold the instrument steady then that's too high of a level of arousal for that task so what's the yerkes-dodson law which is again a key term this is the optimal level up tomorrow theory of motivation says and this is an inverted you function right here can you see that and what it says is you need a Optimum means idea level of arousal whatever cast your engaged in so if you are engaged in a task that you're you're you're too sleepy and you have low level is not going to work if you're too high or too frenzy herb Paddock and you can't control your functions that's too high so we got too high to low whatever I don't care so sensation-seekers right sensation Seekers are people like extroverts who need to have that extra neurotransmitters to make them feel normal so sensation-seekers are Thrill Seekers you're my daughter and my son both of them today they jumped out of airplanes with parachute Co skydiving for a sensation in your doesn't make sense to me but that they wanted to have that thrill that's what a sensation-seeker thinks about thrilling adventure yordis inhibited by one of those experiences a few people who are sensation Seekers that you could make this a personality connection to motivation but if you always have to be doing something you need a higher level of arousal or you have it automatically higher-level arousal and if you don't get the things that you want you get bored and I'm sure a number of you are having a tissue these days okay so just for fun it's always good to check where you're at we already did the drive reduction theory we did that instinct the first part the role of the hypothalamus lateral ventromedial hypothalamus member you don't have to remember exactly which which but you do have to know that too it part of it you overeat you damage the other part you don't eat do you follow and that is fundamentally a biological element to motivation we call that the physiological motives or biological motives we already talked about paraventricular nucleus we talked about now here this is all new to the set point again we talked a little bit psychological aspects when we talked about external Etc so where can I get back down here to to some of this sensation Seekers yes course yes drugs to increase the level of arousal drugs to reduce the level of arousal sometimes I'm sure yeah okay good question so we already talked about cues we would call are factors internal factors would be blood glucose level stomach size if it's shrinking its it sends signals to the hypothalamus to start eating things of that nature those of the internal and external artery or stimuli again stomach size we already talked about these things hypo and Hyper liver hypothalamus fat rat and skinny rat remember part of the hypothalamus aptitude app to excuse my appetites to stimulate hormones right Mary Jane satiety means fullness again ventromedial you don't have to know exactly which is which I'll look corpus callosum isn't that interesting what that is a neuropeptide y that one prevents or stops you from eating okay very important that say do its effects hunger helps keep blood sugar levels both starts and stops eating interesting I don't know if you'll see that but if you do that's it glucagon another peptide causes heating to cease to stop these are monitored the brain probably in the hypothalamus this is fun 10 minutes after eating this kicks in so eat slower and you eat less fun fact the set-point now this is where this is the new stuff okay so set point and metabolic rate these both deal with how your body processes nutrients and so the significance is that your body automatically monitors your nutrient level your blood sugar level at cetera and when you are below those levels it slows down your metabolism when you were at hot homeo status and you have homeostasis and you have a ideal cut a balance of nutrients and energy needs your metal metabolic rate is a little bit higher set point is connected to the metabolic rate it is his where your body knows if you go below the set point you were going to increase your you're going to die Kris I don't know how to write decrease but you're going to decrease that's terrible I'm going to annotate on top of this thing you're going to decrease your I want to do that where is that okay you're going to decrease is your metabolism does that make sense and then when you supposedly when you're over your set point you increase your metabolism least that's the idea that I'm understanding here I guess we can go on the website and find more if you need to but that's that's what I'm saying it okay to let's look at the words now okay we have a thermostat your your thermostat but your weight thermostat is that when your body weight is load increases your appetite not sure how that's connected to set point off the top of my head but your body automatically knows your ideal functioning and it senses your level of nutrients and it changes if you decrease your new toy you reduce your metabolic rate till 3 sample at this is very evolutionary if there's in times of Plenty you've built fat you store the nutrients in times of hunger you draw are the nutrients that is stored in the fat and so when the set-point drops it conserves your fat when the set point is more elevated than you your you don't conserve the fat if you're at homeostasis you're not conserving energy do you follow it's kind of complicated your metabolic rate regulates our energy your body uses so if you're working hard your metabolism is going to be very efficient if you're less if you're more sedentary like Vivitar right now your your body is going to get out store a lot of nutrients basil is at rest your set point app at which weight thermostat is set increases or decreases your metabolism that a big idea does that make sense so your body automatically knows its way and when there's a problem or an imbalance your set point changes and you will have fuel burn more energy or reduce your burning of energy depending on your needs this is kind of complicated I'm not doing a very good job here's a quote the body is homeostatic when we are at the set point and then if it is activated to reach the set point when we fall below so what that means is we how do we monitor these with a growing secreted by an empty stomach hormone signals the brain to eat right orexin hormone secreted by the hypothalamus I'm not sure if this is in your textbook or not but this it wasn't for sure in The Bernstein and that's why I'm getting my information on this one insulin hormone secreted by pancreas controls your blood glucose people with diabetes have problems with producing it Glen in processing the glucose and so that's why they need to get insulin shot to process the blood to automatic blood sugars that are going on another one is leptin let's hit the protein it is secrete my fat cells increases your metabolism okay and decreases when you're hungry when you're we don't have enough nutrients on on hand so he got growing erection insulin and leptin another one that's I get all these things work to send signals to the brain high and remember that one but against all of these are in the blood hormonal endocrine system and they're monitored in the brain okay so did we LBC ways yeah so let's go back so that's blood chemistry I'm going to open this up for commentary any questions on this cuz this is kind of complicated which ones are like the most importance of leptin leptin and ghrelin I've seen on test before and then the set point for sure and wait thermostat so again in the idea with all of these things is that your body monitors your weight your body monitors your metabolism when you don't have enough when you don't have enough nutrients your body sense is it and lowers your metabolism and you start pulling away from your fat cells who's talking hello okay do you follow any other questions on the set point in set point is always tested any other questions here okay so wait yeah good luck okay okay good so let's just go continuing situational influences let's see this these situational influences are also known as external stimuli it I should just right thing it what this means is that these are external influences so when you're around people you want to eat more or drink more for that matter if you are by yourself you're probably have a tendency to eat less other kinds of stimuli you see a nice big piece of chocolate cake or some nice soup you see a large meal Etc you eat more that's all the external or situational influences T motivate eating basically College excellent so let's talk about obesity so obesity is getting too much weight for your body fat mass index don't know much about that really but social issues this is their psychology associated with obesity of course there is there's there's going to be kind of personality factors to obesity Derby social factors to Tri-City you know how does our society value or criticize people who are overweight abnormal behavior associated with obesity because you know it creates anxiety can give you a different disorders Etc so that's kind of a lot of connections to obesity let's look at what we got here so again these are factors women have the big biggest issue and there's an increase in depression abnormal again obesity is about fat storage basically why are people obese they don't get enough exercise guys and they don't they eat too much and so they have a surplus of calories and that's why people gain weight there can be a number of factors for this and I don't think they could be social factors other people it could be learn factors you know you were reinforced in your eating behaviors so there's a lot of issues going around with obesity can obesity also be with biological factor absolutely no that's a very good question thank you God I'm forgetting your names Josh Joshi how are you so yes but basically some people like half of thyroid issues and I really don't know how this works but there's a the thyroid manages your metabolism and so if people have low metabolism and they don't burn that the the nutrients that they intake and because they're not exercising enough for you not being having a enough physical activity then you have a tendency to use those used store most nutrients and again that's this fundamentally a physiological issue I believe that the thyroid gland which is also involved in a little bit of this regulating of our metabolism defect thyroid scan create obesity as I understand it is that help Josh okay good diabetes can be caused by obesity which means you're not processing of Sugar's properly you can have severe problems high blood pressure because your your heart has to work harder and the capillaries in your brain and other parts of the body get really upset did it to high blood pressure that's why people have strokes and and their eyesight diminishes with high blood pressure at sets from heart disease with obesity you get what they called plaque in the arteries guys know how that works the artery get filled lemon drop picture of it heart disease is UK what's that stuff that goes in the arteries cholesterol you get cholesterol the arteries like that and that's when you get a heart attack the heart a heart attack is your heart disease and that causes kills a part of the the heart muscle and you die from it the heart stops beating because of it so don't get heart disease aren't these are all connected lower life expectancy for sure a cognitive decline for women who are obese what's a fun interesting deal isn't it Alzheimer's is dementia there is some connection to that not not one to one for sure but that's something that's kind of interesting again set point back to set point the set point for people who are be served is very low they need less food to maintain their weight their body Burns fewer calories when we are burning fat energy conservation that's what's happening you're storing the energy nutrients in your fat cells because you have an overabundance of the nutrients and you're not burning that you begin when you if you want it lose you want to have a balance between the your your diet you need to still eat if you can't if you fast your set point is going to drop and you're not going to burn the calories so you eat small low calorie foods and keep up exercise and that's a recipe for losing weight low calorie foods exercise and so what you're you're going to increase your metabolism which means you're still going to burn those calories but you're not going to store them because you're going to burn more than you're in taking but you're also fooling your stomach to say or your metabolism to say oh yeah plenty of nutrients so spill from your fat and don't reduce your set point that's the difference if you if you fast you're going to reduce your set point and you're you're going to your metabolism is going to be real and you're not going to burn the fat does it make sense I hope so that's a better explanation than I did before you follow you can also read some of this okay moving on Waste Management again diesel diesel recall again these are tips for losing weight eating habits exercise exposure too tempting Foods that's an external stimuli remember if I see the good food I want to eat it simple meals fruits greens vegetables this is basic greens that's like lettuce small portion side that's another really big one don't Americans love these giant giant played so smaller plates don't have to eat to your full each slowly all of those things if you're interested in losing weight Eating Disorders this is great what causes someone to throw up their food or to starve themselves so anorexia is basically severe dieting actually starving yourself fun fact with this mostly women mostly adolescents teenagers and young adults for sure that there's a lot of social axe elements to it their social elements because Society info reinforces the ideal body size is etcetera in magazine and other areas and there's also a perception issue this is it again Wichita sing about a abnormal behavior this is totally abnormal it's a disorder it's a will talk about that when I get to abnormal psych I know it's knocked me on your AP exam but we're going to have a month after the AP to make you something and we'll look at abnormal then for sure but so just to finish anorexia it's a perceptual issue and what we mean by that is the people who have an erection are not seeing the world Acura they're seeing themselves in the mirror and they see a fat person they don't see the reality of the situation and that's one of the two big problems with anorexia in terms of their self-concept and perception to again remember when we do the AP exam it's going to have cenarios here Susie she's going to new high school and then it would have a description of Susie and what's what's half with her and then we'll have a list of bulleted ideas bulleted points that you need to address and there could be an abnormal connection a perception connection a social connection a Cognitive Connection the biological etcetera that you will have to or have to explain and they're very specific and what they're asking you to recall it's not so open-ended in terms of they will give you a list of things that you have to address but it is open-ended and how you address how you articulate how you explain it all right so that's anorexia another was bulimia bulimia is where you eat and and then expel even using laxatives don't do that at this seem very healthy using laxatives to to lose weight really really dangerous excellent any questions preguntas what is Neurosis nervosa mean I don't know I don't know you got to Google somebody Google O'Hare perception wow he's already here they think they're fat exaggerated fears of becoming fat distorted messages from the media we already talked about those perfect daughter issues and killed these are all abnormal behaviors with people who deal with bulimia and anorexia treating disorders you need they have Behavioral Counseling just going to give you one detail about Behavioral Counseling that means using if you're involved in behavioral therapy that means you're you sing the concepts of conditioning behavioral means conditioning so what they're trying to do is deconditioned bad behavior and recondition new Behavior so yeah if you automatically see if he's taking you go yum yummy mr. Richard that behavior has been rewarded so what you want to do is extinguish that kind of eating Behavior extinguish oh there it is look how smart I am it says right there Extinction which is a condition in concept remember that everybody member can just Extinction the cognitive app watch that is the change the thinking patterns you see that wait up to think about it this is that a behavioral approach and then your cognitive approach to why we get to daughter and also to how to treat it how old is stuff comes together which I sit on this side for a while usually need outside help for all of these write a synthesis paragraph explaining how all these mechanisms should be understood in other words what do we learn about eating motivation from these mechanisms this would be like an frq this this would be very like very much like what you're going to see in the AP exam you're going to get a topic synthesize means you put it all together what how do all of these things work together to help us understand eating motivation the answer will be something like and I'll offer this for to you is that these are all biological biological explanation and eating behavior and then you go into the endocrine and Joe kren system remember we talked about the endocrine system in the beginning in the bio stuff so I would say you would talk about the hypothalamus and see how that works for you as a major component All Right Moving On but again you should talk about set point 10 things of that nature Coolidge all right okay we already talked to her taste aversion this is a key concept again this is typically see lean and conditioning isn't it that's where we mostly talked about it but here is a very good example of the crossing over from one area to the other so again Taste to hunger tensed and depressed crave carbohydrates anybody doing that right now who's eating there can be a what what this means is there's a behavioral or a psychological factors is a psychological factors to eating you guys you guys know the term hangry yeah Riverbend hangrys you know I get that way sometimes I'm sure some of you seen that but if you also if you're anxious what's the common thing you see with this anybody what do you mean well where where do what do people eat when they're depressed and their tents and all that ice cream that's right ice cream isn't that isn't that neat so those are what we call Behavioral or psychological factors to you are upset and you shouldn't either gallon of ice cream or half gallon whatever they the similar to carbohydrates as one of those Suites I got it increases your serotonin level kind of interesting that's why you like chocolate so much and it has calming effects you fill your tummy you calm down so there's psychological factors to eating that's interesting let's see if we care evolutionary spicy food off what's the story with spicy food anybody know why do we fight people don't like spicy food or scared of it mentally interesting it's not that say white people it's evolutionary with a number of factors one factor is what foods are available so for example Cuba Cuban food is is really Bland they don't like spicy at all they don't have a lot of Agriculture that is diverse on that island and so their food products chicken or fish lot of rice and beans and fruits that are indigenous to that region Mexico is a massively much greater food source of food supply they eat ground corn in The Valleys of Mexico's full of corn and they have all kinds of Chiles and spices Etc South America Peru they don't need a lot of me because there's not an especially in Peru area specifically they don't have a lot of meat so what meat dishes they do have their you know very specific and it's not like America we have these giant steaks and all that so sorry what is so it's evolutionary and it depends on the environment but significance here is reason why people started eating spicy foods they say was that it intended to make you not get sick because it would kill the bacteria in the food is not interesting how about this pregnant women food dislikes and nausea Peak around the 10th week wow that's interesting again that's evolutionary so pregnant women and nausea as well as food dislikes are designed to help protect the embryo neat what do they want from from poisons and things of that nature toxins All Right Moving On so here's another motivations to avoid pain we are motive to avoid paying memory this isn't the crossover sensation perception we talked about this I don't know how well we did it with sensation perception but that's where we discussed paying member the pain gate theories anybody remember that you guys said if anybody remember that you didn't get a good job on that one when you felt something instead of it going to your brain it kind of stopped at your spinal cord yes yes perfect it looks more like this let me try to draw it but this would be something you have to know so your spinal cord set message to the brain I have a pain here that's going to the brain to be processed right depending on the type of pain it is can be blocked by another type of pain for example I can you could be stimulated in it so you have a chronic pain you can be extra stiff play the in a slightly painful way and it will block the message of this pain and you'll get only the message of this point does that make sense and so it's a way of reducing a more severe pain with a minor paint and that way they say there's these Gates where the pain neurons enter the spinal cord can be blocked by other one there's large fibers and small fibers remember the large fibers are a strong pain painkiller neurons that sending the message to the brain so again in a few you block it with a short small pain response or stimuli and that blocks the other one that is more severe anyhow those are some pain issues sensation perception pain gate Theory and then other things about pain tolerance remember we did this there's a whole list of things to you can do to avoid paying you remember any of those distraction remember that anybody distraction you remain calm expectations all of these are factors that can reduce your pain experience pain tolerance is conditioned you know anybody any boys in the audio sit wherever told don't cry don't manifest pain like that any boys ever been told that it's so it's a fundamental gender bias gender roles of course but it's also reinforced you learn boys are supposed to be in pain and cry in pain but yet especially with emotional pain but yet women are not held for that same standard can you cry is on that for men no they're not for it'll be fine it's just the way of the world I don't support it by the way cuz imma you know feminist alright Boswell we seem also about 10 times any questions on any of this you have to know what self-actualization is you have to see that Maslow's hierarchy of needs his follows a pattern people rarely get to self-actualization but we do cancel but a big idea I would like to share with you briefly is if you get this meat need met then you can go on to the other levels if you cannot get these needs met all of your energy and all of your motivation is going to be to meet that need once you meet this need then you go to the next need and that motivates our Behavior so this is Maslow's comprehensive explanation of why people behave the way they do why why are people unhappy in this time that we're living in right now at this pandemic because we are insecure we are in very always say this uncertain time these things are uncertain and so that gives us anxiety and we're spending more of our time being motivated by this to follow we are not going out and interact what other people were staying home as much as possible least most of us are and we're not we're missing out on belonging aren't we maybe we'll that motivates us to get on the internet do you follow so I hope this makes sense to you that each level is specific sometimes we fluctuate we go down a level or we go up depending on the status in our needs and what we're getting any questions on this wow we're almost right where we're supposed to be okay wow we already know about intrinsic extrinsic motivation the need for affiliation affiliation needs other people or social we get it we get reward this is very important biological aspects to motivation attachments that's from our childhood this is about relationships isolation oestrogen rejection when we get when we are rejected we are ostracize right people don't like us it manifest in the brain as physical pain did you know that it has the same brain areas are highlighted as physical pain meds these are we looked at those are the matinees right there rich Justice uniqueness cetera alright here's the new Maslow do we care about this no you know why cuz we like the old easy Maslow but this is congruent it's reinforced it's the similar but they break down these pieces they break down this simple more simplistic and they look at the much greater much more detailed elements to follow all right Mama. I got to race all this blah blah blah actualizacion again we've done this when we did personality look back at it a little bit right now again the humanists say that the number one motive in this is latent this is underlying all Behavior it can be conscious but doesn't have to be that we want our 6 are growth we want positive things in our life and everyone wants that and so when we don't proceed that we're getting it that can cause abnormal behavior and again we engage in. behaviors because we're lacking in some other one but we all are focused on this we called the growth potential so we talked about this is reinforced what we did only one and a hundred become fully actualized that's what we said remember marinades person meet survival needs then moves on a Milanese if these are unfulfilled are in a syndrome of Decay so what they're saying is that as you're you're going up on this pyramid here as you're progressing from one level to the next to the neck tell the next if you don't find something meaningful to maintain your motives your behavior then you're going into that syndrome of decay and you are you get depression and apathy you're just existing I bet you some of you were experiencing A syndrome of Decay right now as we're going through this problem with the coronavirus you're probably not being as successful as you would like to be in the number of Fairways these are Maslow's metaneeds I think you'll see any of them if you do just know they're higher needs and the basic needs they still impact us we are motivated by them like for example Beauty who doesn't want nice things visually pleasing aesthetically pleasing things around them right people want to feel that they're special Etc they want to be independent do you like creative things neat things some of your social justice people write those would be considered metaneeds it we already talked about extrinsic and intrinsic motivations very easy let's say for example Jim not Ginger Georgia sorry be there still are you with us Georgia would you say you were primarily intron sickly motivated or extrinsically motivated in your academics your adjusted to make a comment you're one of the most high play successful students we have at the school extremely intelligent you do every piece of work that I as far as I can tell and you're not the only one there's lots of kids like you especially in AP classes so for you are you what what do you explain that motivation for how do you explain it more intrinsic I don't know I'd take the classes that I find interesting and then I just do the work so that's fundamentally in many many highly successful people have this intrinsic should we call that by the way we'll come back to this while we can all this we call this High Nach need for achievement so you are one of the kids most a lot of kids in AP classes I have a desire to meet internal standard it's you I have kids that I can't like doobie I can't get less than an A or I'm going to have to do something else you know right if I can't take a zero read book that's these people and there's nothing wrong with it sometimes it's a little compulsive but it's a charity ristic a very successful people this is also what other things should we connect to this what other category of AP should we connect to this parenting parenting so we could squeak a call this parenting try to cultivate that that's really hard to cultivate intrinsic motivation but you can reinforce it I would say personalities the one I was thinking of this is a personality trait is internal motivation Coolidge clear kind of interesting isn't it it's this is always tested by the way and so just be advice on that one all right let's go back we're almost done I think we're going to stop how long have we been on anybody know an hour 8 minutes yeah we need oh yeah yeah because I put a video online so but we do this we're going to we are almost into the really interesting stuff oh my god did you guys read the Masters and Johnson yet nobody read it okay do you remember where it is no where is it I'll show you but let me but so you have to read the master remind you have to read them Masters and Johnson before I cover the sexual motivation because it will make so much more sense so why don't we make a goal have it read by Thursday you think you could send this delay I'll show you where it is let me get let me escape this alright well thanks a million I'm going to stop the recording now I'm actually needs no don't leave but I'm I'm going to show you where this.
