right here we're going to do a lab just called the inertial balance what is an inertial balance this is an inertial balance right here so it's a thing that can measure mass if we create a baseline for and basically oscillates back and forth her she's me your vibrates back and forth so we can use this to maybe create a Baseline and then to make a good interpolation of a mystery Mass just a chunk of metal we're going to put on there and then good guess as to how much mass is in that metal based on what we do today so this is a two-part lab the first part is data collection and creating a baseline graph the second part is going to be using your Baseline graph to try and do a challenge that will allow you to earn some extra credit on a test that's always cool too so let's see what are educated guesses at the beginning how does the mass of an object affect the ability of a force to accelerate the object so we think about this a few ways one way you can think about it is maybe with a shopping cart so I have an empty shopping cart and I push that as hard as I can and I see it speeds up speedups pizza and then I maybe put my friend in the shopping cart so now the shopping cart has more mass not just a shopping cart it's cart and friend and then I try to push as fast as I can but it doesn't speed up as much as it did before so in case I didn't Kris the mass and the acceleration would go down now with this device this is also going to show its acceleration cuz if you look at this carefully right now you see the three things that indicate is accelerating those three things are speeding up slowing and changing direction this device is doing all three of those as I pull it back and then I let go it'll speed up it'll speed up till it gets to this middle position then when it tries to go the other way the bands are going to pull back on it and slow it then when it gets here at stops and changes Direction speeds up slows down changes Direction speeds up slows down changes Direction speeds up slows down changes Direction so this thing is accelerating put a mass on here you can see it's accelerating back and forth watch what happens to the acceleration when I lower the mass you could see it goes faster at this point the acceleration went up now it's real hard to drop it's on here and have it still going but I'll try to add some Mass and you can see when I added Mass it's slow down so let's answer this weekend in question them about the inertial balance so that's the one that said you know how does the mass of an object affect the ability of a force to accelerate the object so what I might write is alright so more mass means or equals less acceleration black speeding up slowing down when changing direction now what will use in this class to describe this when one thing goes up and another goes down we're going to say they are inversely related an inverse relationship or proportion between these two measurements phenomena so let's see what we're going to do in this lab to first of all we'll see that that more mass less acceleration and then we're going to use the information we get from this to create a graph so we're going to open logger pro on the computer so we'll be using computer program again we're going to use a I don't know if you can is there a sec open and logger pro k turn on interface on it's on yeah we're ready to go here okay so we'll be using this device which is a photo gate now this photo gate is going to be used as a pendulum timer so what happens is as this goes back and forth back and forth I'll see you soon so if I record you see light going on and off on and off on and off so let's go ahead and do that coming over here I'm just going to hit the collect button should I start collecting data we'll see if we can see that does flicking so fast that you don't really see it going you might see a kind of going up and down a little bit like I do in in intensity but it goes back and forth so fast it doesn't have time to totally shut off actually it's not shutting off or anything huh we're getting data that's good okay let me see something here alright it's on might not be flickering for us but that's okay collecting data so I'm going to come up here open logger pro again so we open logger pro following the directions in this lab Santa plug in the lab Pro that's what I did that was that beat beat them up a beep and then it says open logger pro on the computer that's what I just done then we're going to go up to the file menu go to file open number one I choose probes and sensors and in there there's a folder that's called the total Gates and the Pendulum timer so this is what it'll look like as we're collecting data we have a graph that says measurement number on the bottom and. 10 seconds so if we read the directions on the slab it says push the click button or pull the inertial balance about 1 inch to the side and let go push the collectible push the what button after it is started vibrating let the experiment run for at least 5 measurements and push the start button push the state button and record the mean which is the average. So. That is a specific time measurement that repeats like maybe you have physics during third period while we go and periods during a day of school because 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 6th and 7th are all at the same time frame so you go from one. Then you go to the next then to the next it's about the same time so we should get about the same time for the periods in here that's what. Means and the symbol used for. Is where are we right there capital T that's why I've been asking you to make sure when your listing time use a lower case T because uppercase t stands for. Now the period of this balance is the time it takes to go back and forth once will revisit turn. In the second semester when we study waves because the period of a sound wave is related to its pitch and the period of a light wave is related to its color or even if we can see it at all so we'll be getting back to that later so we're going to record the. And then the mean. The average and then we're going to put a 50g mass on the inertial balance we're going to repeat the experiment with the 50 and then we're going to keep going up by 50s so I'm going to get this thing going the inertial balance there it is it's if you can see it's vibrating back and forth and what I'm going to do is I'm going to push this after it's vibrating or oscillating we could call it then I'm going to what data I thought I was going to collect data and as soon as we have five measurements there that's plenty they're all about the same which is great because when I come up here and hit my state button it brings up a statistics of the. So let's zoom in on that this is the data that we're going to want going to want to record so the statistics regarding the. We want the me and that's that first one that's that .553 seconds but we want lab here to get Dad it routed to the hundredths place so we want around this ever going to record it down here where it says in the data table the four zero Mass on the balance go to 0.53 in my first box now I'm going to add 50 g start this oscillating hey let's find a. 150g on there I expected. To be a little higher yeah it is like a little bit higher that's enough measurements now let's get mean and .757 rounds to 0.76 show me a 350 G there it went up by .239 go take the 50 off and put a hundred on get it oscillating again and collect some data it is slowing down with more mass less acceleration with more mass let's get the state 938 seconds is are mean. So that's the average so around that the 0.9 4 now that one went up for about 18 100 so the last one went up 23 100 so it looks like it's not quite perfectly even but as we what do I line of best fit that takes care of that so now I'm going to go to 1:50 so now it's about me just adding 50 grams each time and us getting via state so collect so the next one would be 1.09 with rounds the 1.10 up to 200 g being added to the now to the balance and we're starting to collect data skip the statistics the average is 1.25 so we went up 15/100 there the previous one it looks like about 15 100s so it looks like we're getting pretty consistent on how much time is going up each time we had 50 g alright so I'm going to add another 50 here if it's been going up about 1,500 that I expected to be about 1.4 or something I'll see if I get something around there wow 1.40 that's convenient science work sometimes so 1.40 to or record that is 1.40 know if it goes up to 15 again I would expect when I go to 3 now that it would be up to maybe 1.55 or somewhere near that okay we're somewhere near that 1.555 which will round to 1.56 so it's going up pretty consistently at this point I'm going to have another 50 so we're up to 3:50 now collect let it run for a few times I'm looking at the data table making sure things are pretty consistent so you can see if it's collecting data it showing me as it comes up the. It's staying pretty cancer and let's go in stop it and Stat so 1.7 to 3 is the average this time so sorry the more in the middle so that's 1.7 2 not 104.1 6 so that's very consistent with what we've been seeing going to put 400 on here now Rite Aid is starting to come in here 1.90 9900 mustache they're all the same so 1.90 is going to be our 400 that went up a little bit more when up by 1:18 so this could be where we're starting to reach the the limit of how much these bands on the side of this inertial balance can handle before they start twisting and doing other things which would set the. Make it a little bit higher the normal so it'll be a nonlinear function anymore yeah it looks like we've got it's getting at this point so we probably gone beyond a little bit of what this can handle 2.13 yeah that would help out a lot so try this again with the 500 see what we get as a.m. . yeah looks like we're starting to get nonlinear at this point so we've reached the maximum capacity we can put on this valence so there's our last one 2.33 yeah the last two went up by like .23 and .2 also we're seeing some things happening and if I go and look if we go and look at the going on with the balance here so let's come over here so I got 500 on there and I don't know if you can tell maybe if I stack them all inside a little bit you can kind of see it that this one starts the boat in a little bit maybe if you look from this end and you'll notice it a bit more and then when it starts going it's kind of bouncing and it's twisting a little bit in there which is going to lose some of the energy. I think so it's not going to move as fast and we should see our. Becoming increasingly longer when we had 50 grams and that's what we did see so there's a limit to descale of course I could get one if I could get one of these inertial balance is not a scale of balance that had stronger bands on the side on their okay so what we want to do now is to take this data that we've collected that's down here the state of the mass and pure and we want to make a. Versus Mass graph so make a. Versus mask rap on the back I might suggest that you. Versus mass that means periods going to be on the y-axis mass is going to be reacts I'm going to do it landscape it really doesn't matter which way you do it I'm using capital T for. And that's in seconds and mass m that's in grams and I'll put team versus em up here we have to get to see our highest time was 2.33 seconds so we need to get up to about two and a half seconds and we need to get up to 500 on a mass scale so let's 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 910 one two three four five six seven eight nine 10 one two three four five six seven eight nine ten notice when I'm breaking my graph a part I'm not worried about the numbers yet I'm just worried about space is even being consistent 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 and then one two one two three four five six seven eight nine 10 like we can get up the 500-year this would be 100 200 300 400 now I go back and label and I usually won't skip one when I do it this way sometimes when your labeling too many things you might go to for sale can well you won't do it if you're doing the numbers right there but if you do like 2 and then draw a line and then another line do for and another line and do six now there's a chance the next line will be at so make sure you do all the lines first and then go I can do the numbers it leads to less error 0 down here on the side and the time I see we have to get up at 2 & a half seconds 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 1 2 3 4 five six seven eight nine 10 one two three four five I'm going to go back in the middle ones here the fives labeled I was so this is going to be 0.5 seconds is 1.0 1.5 to .0 and 2.5 so I'm going to be able to really spread out my data and the reason we want to spread out our data is because we want to take an object be right back here it is this is our mystery Mass so what I'm going to do is I'm going to put that on our balance so I'm not that up on this and get it vibrating it's like it was for the experiment and I'm going to collect the. For the mystery Mass so let's see what that is a sermon on the. For you so I will collect data and then stop and stat 1.596 that would round to 1.6 so 1.60 is the period for the mystery Mass so we have a zoom out here a little bit so down here I recorded one .26 seconds as the period of the mystery thing so I think it's going to be somewhere in between 300 and 350 that's where 1.60 Falls in here now we're between 300 and 350 so we can do 160 we can do as far away from this and is 12 away from that tried estimate do ratios between 300-350 one of the easier ways is once you plot your points on here you'll have a straight line so I'm not going to plot the points going to draw straight line on here so let's say after you plot your points you draw your line of best fit did you use a straightedge and of course my straight edge moved and I did that so let me erase and try again do you want a nice straight line you're a straight line function it should be a straight line function with the inertia so beginning of that was straight I will try again it's time I'll hold on to the ruler there we go so I got a nice straight line function here now if I take a guess if I knew that. Was 1.6 that's right here that's 1.60 what I would do is I would go over to my graph making weird noises and then once I hit the line I drop straight down now remember I didn't plot points so mine's not going to wind up in the right spot I don't want to show you that cuz it's a challenge lap so I wind up being a little past 300 here I would zoom in on this scale and this is the next line is 310 so I see him about halfway between 300 and 3/10 it looks like a little closer to 300 so I might guess this is it 304 grams and that would be for the mystery Mass that's how we interpret an answer on our base so now we can put anything within like maybe 4 to 500 G that's our limit on this scale measure the. And then if the. Is you know 1.2 seconds Go 1.2 over your life drop straight down that's the mass so good luck I hope this gets finished up make sure you turn it in for credit and I'll talk to you later
