smoke since we lost our son and it's just a trying time for me and our family just kind of a light of our life so we've lost so much and I guess we're tired and seeing all that loss so hoping that with your wisdom that you will choose to do what you can to ensure that grit times whatever she needs to learn but that so she gets whatever help she needs to in terms of making better decisions now life you're in a bow supposed to go play at the biggest level of college football and now I just got to watch it on TV and said I love living the dream I've been working so hard for for the past 4 years songs you took the one thing that helped me get up every morning and work hard in class gone and I can never do it again that's why Express are the way this has affected and effected our our your every 15-minute program my name is Tony Contreras something you have public information officer for the San Diego CHP office  the every 15-minute program is administered Sade Why by the CHP play grants from the state of office of traffic safety  developed to prevent teen drinking and driving the every 15-minute program as one of the sea teen driving program programs the California Highway Patrol is involved in with the goal of reducing crashes and fatalities among teenagers the two-day programme focuses on high school juniors and seniors challenging challenging them to think about drinking driving personal safety and the responsibility of making mature decisions impacting family friends and others every 15-minute program dramatically presents through realistic demonstrations the effect that a fatal impaired driver crash hasn't asked the families and their communities  this powerful program is designed to create awareness among students that they are not invincible this program helps open at the emotional doors in in it they experienced firsthand how their actions affect the lives of so many other people the every 15-minute program is a partnership of law-enforcement educator firefighters Community hospital's emergency medical responders Chaplin's counselors that judiciary Community groups  local businesses in parents  teenagers need to know the consequences if they get behind the wheel if they've been drinking or they choose to get into a car with someone who has been drinking so what is the end result program helps the student see members of their community in a different lights they are no longer just cops  doctors paramedics or fire but our mentors mentors in human beings who care about the youth in the community furthermore research has shown after participating in the every 15-minute program students are less likely to drive when drinking and are less likely to be a passenger with a never who had been drinking I want to present to the stage your ASB president Miley lamp hey good morning everyone we're going to start by hang up principal Hans Becker good morning students Daffin parents thank you for again as I mentioned yesterday for your respect I'm very proud of your behavior and I just want to say a couple quick things first off is that I tell I told you when you were freshmen that I think high school was an amazing part of your life and I think High School it's more than just learning academics and Athletics of the Arts it's also about making sure that you're successful in the world but we want you to get there is Pro time this is something to help you remember that maybe you'll go to the rest of your life never forgetting what happened these past two days  dismiss program in Spanish using or taking from a lot of a lot of generosity and I give so much things to generous people who contribute the time Town some should I charge make this possible but I special I could give a shout out to Miss Amy Danny who work tirelessly to make this happen and I think  have you so she had no idea what this program was and he handed it to her and she took it off and running with it then it's amazing loved ones in the parents also wrote a letter to their student so we have Christian Torres here to read his parent letter to his parents dear Mom every 15 minutes someone is killed in a DUI accident tonight I died and this is what I didn't get to tell you  everyday we are faced with challenges new obstacles to overcome sometimes I feel like dealing with you is the worst one but now I see that having you in my life is the greatest gift and I get to relive it read a yes there are people who don't even know their mom or have lost them and I bet they give anything to just have them back in their lives even if it was for 5 minutes sometimes I lose track of how lucky I am to call you my mom and see you talk to you hug you have a fun relationship that not everyone gets to experience the days where we don't agree on things are not avoidable will always have bad days but nothing will overcome the bond we share  I used to think that you are so strict and that it was for no reason but now I see why I always think that it can be me and that something tragic couldn't could never happen to me or even you but now I realize that in an inch the precious thing that we take advantage of called life can be taken away without warning  and now I see where you're coming from program has been so I opening I wish everyone could be a part of it the realization that this tragedy could occur to anyone at any moment shocks me and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy I hope that by us doing this we can make an impact on so many people and help prevent future incidents I don't want anything left set between us and I know that no matter the arguments the dumb fights or us not seeing eye to eye know I will always love you and then I want you to be in my life for as long as possible no matter the hardships you are my mom and I am your son and nothing can ever take that away from us love your son Christian and now I have lower York's mom Alisa Rock dear Chloe  since the day you were born your dad and I have done our best let you know and feel how much we love you as you grew the path that lay before you became clearer and less distinct at the same clearer because your personality and character were developing with every passing day we could see the amazing person you were and the one that you would someday be  the pass was left to find because all of your endless possibilities and opportunities we're yet to come  there are so many things that we shared yet so many things still to experience  we will never steal our chest still with pride as you graduate from college we will Todd crostini good morning going thank you very much for the opportunity to be here today so I'm a trauma surgeon at UC San Diego and that means that I have what I think is the best job in the world because I get to meet patients I get to meet families and I get to meet them sometimes on the worst day of their lives and I can find out what's wrong with them I can see what's broken I can see bleeding I can do surgery I can fix it and I can get them back to normal  so I'm a trauma surgeon and I have the worst job in the world because sometimes I can't do those things sometimes no matter how much we work how hard we try how much we've trained the the surgeries that we do it never makes people the same again too many times have I had to wake patients up after a bad injury in and tell them that they're not going to walk again like you saw here today too many times have I add to tell people that they're they're never going to be able to speak again they're not going to be able to interact with their families because they had brain injuries they're never going to be able to go on to school grab a job  and even worse like you sought today I have to meet with families and rooms  on the worst day of their life and tell them that their loved one is is passed away and isn't coming home again I just want to show you a little bit about what we do at our trauma center and and kind of how that Siri insist for me cuz this is my reality everyday this is what I see every day so you're taken from the scene of your accident and go to the next slide and you're brought to my Trauma Center UC San Diego might be brought there by an ambulance you might be brought there by helicopter but we're there we're always there myself for my partners were there 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year because we deal with this all the time and where they're waiting and so we get a page we still wear page hard to believe but it says it patients coming in and they're hurt you next slide and how do you end up at UCSD will you in San Diego you end up at UCF because where you get injured determines where you're going to go for your trauma care and you're lucky to live in a city with some of the best trauma care in the world but since you live in La Jolla if your and in this area you're coming to my Trauma Center no matter what and I think that's a good thing next slide  this is where you're going to end up this is a this is a Ray's Place this is our trauma resuscitation room when you wheel in that room  on a stretcher brought in by the paramedics there's about eight people waiting for you there 3dr standing there waiting for you there's two nurses there's a doctor an anesthesia doctor there in case they have to put a breathing tube in to breathe for you  in this this is what we see every day we're ready for this but and we like to help people on the worst day of their life but we we don't want to have to do it we certainly don't want to have to do it with young health people like yourself with your lies ahead of you go to the next slide  and sometimes this is where we end up this is the trauma operating room this is where I do most of my work again you know we can help people here but this is this is serious business you you know it can end up you know start a situations in like I said sometimes we can help you in and sometimes unfortunate I can't make you the same way that you are before next  so this is I'm just showing you basically that the change in an injury patterns as you get older next life so where does the info point you guys can all see that graph you can all see where the where that line jumps up with the number of people being injured every year that's right at about 16 17 years old that's your age so you go from having a fairly low rate of trauma to a pretty high rate of trauma this is national days not just San Diego this is across the country next slide you can see here that the number of in that red line there as motor vehicle crashes  you see that line at the next slide  where that line up again is right at your age and a lot of this is due to drinking student scissions that people make experiences or situations that they're put in and where they made the wrong choice and they end up in an accident next slide list of shows again same thing at that same point 15 years old you guys are getting people are getting hurt and they're bad Reese it's just shows the various different levels of injury the lower the lines on the lower level with at UC hop up at age 15 those are injuries that are life-threatening or Unser Google  next line next line and then this is  I think it in Port slide in we have a lot of medical problems this is looking at why people die in in the country look at that blue on the top that goes from about age one to age 25 the number one killer of people is trauma a lot of people think of trauma is just a random event that happens to people it's just it's an accident right I was there's nothing I can do about it it's just this this random horrible event that's out of my control but I'd say it's differ I'd say something different I'd say trauma is level trauma is a disease there's something we can do about this there's choices that we all make no one wakes up in the morning and expects I'm going to be in a trauma when they're having breakfast with their family before go to school or go out that day but sure enough the decisions that you got you make the experiences that you're involved in throughout the day can shape  your risk for these in what can happen to you there's things that you can do you can not drink you can not drink and get in a car if it's your friend you can take their keys you can barricade their car there's things that we can do  to stop the stuff from happening next slide  try this is just the last thing I want to show do you know if I'm sure this is a great program and in red think does a great job of driving importance home but for anyone thinking up there that now this isn't going to be me asking to be me I hope it's not a choice is that you make and choices that other people make her going to affect you this is something that again I see this everyday but touched Our Lives as well this is an accident that occurred with some of our medical students this is the car of a drunk driver going the wrong way in the 163 can see it's on the side the paramedics are there to help you can see that car there's that car that for of of our medical students were traveling in there people who are going to be doctors in a couple years hopefully going to help a lot of people unfortunately two of them didn't survive the crash and two of them or injured severely so I want to leave you with that again we can do something to help this you guys can all do something there's going to be a time in your life when you have a chance to make a decision and helps yourself or help somebody else and so again you very much for the opportunity to be here today I'm here to speak to us next is the honorable Judge David Rubin well first of all good morning and thank you for allowing me to participate in this wonderful program that was a real honor for me to be part of it but like doctor Santini my job is the best of times when I help with adoptions and help put families together and it's the worst of times when I am looking down courtroom and seeing a young person who's committed a crime like driving under the influence in which that person has killed somebody in an accident as octave we're good doctors said you think it cannot happen to you but trust me in my career which is fan 30 years and their criminal justice system I have looked down many times and see somebody across the table or down at counsel table who thought it couldn't happen to them and it did I'm the last person that a person sees before they are let out lower to go to state prison it is my job to do what some might think the unthinkable have to listen to the victims families they tell me the can unspoken trama if they have gone through the injuries that leave them in wheelchairs the injuries that take away their children from them orally their children vegetables in a in a hospital loss of limbs or loss of life I weighed against the horrible statements of the parents of the defendants the young people who are there who they raised well they taught their children not to do these things these children fact knew not to do these things but they drank and they drove anyway and it's my job to weigh the unwe able to figure out one against the other what is the right thing to do  am I college do this every single day across the county and across the state across indeed across the country because as you seen every 15 minutes some young person gets himself into one of these situations which is entirely preventable  and you should know but it is tragic when loser loser life loses the ability to walk or speak what have you  but it's very very tragic for judges to have to send young people to state then to spend a good part of the rest of their lives and it is the tution as difficult as State Prison can be  and you should know so why we hate doing it because all you have so much promise as I look across all of you so much promise there are doctors and lawyers and I know somewhere in this audience someone has a cure for cancer or someone is found a vaccine against some horrible disease  but you should know notwithstanding your potential if have to I'll send you the state prison as my colleagues will  so it's critical as you look out across the Horizon of what's going a wonderful and fabulous life I know that all of you will lead the we're all going to make choices out there you're all going to make choices but the one choice cannot make is to drink or do drugs and get behind the wheel you just cannot do it because you will meet somebody like me if you survived dr. costantini trauma surgery room  you'll meet someone like me who have to do the right thing as difficult and traumatic as it is for you your family and for this community  urge all of you to think carefully about drinking using drugs and driving  Arch wonderful lies the path you can choose the path is as include the Grim Reaper going to State Prison  I don't want to thank you all for allowing me to be here remind me to participate I have great faith in all of you and the next time I see interview I like it to be as attorneys and my courtroom arguing an important case thank you and a half of Mothers Against Drunk Driving we have Larry mcnamer good morning everybody before I get into my story I I would like to thank everyone that participated in making this event go off as well as it has its it's been wonderful and a all thanks to to Amy doing a wonderful job with this thank you leaving my home on a wonderful Saturday evening  going to be gone for 25 or 30 minutes had some errands I needed to take care of an I was getting in my car I noticed my 15 year old son Sean his 15 year old friend Tyler crossed in front of my truck and I yelled out the window I should be back in a few minutes okay Dad and he nodded wait my wife and I having had four boys we'd always try to find different ways with each one of them but they would feel they have to special thing going on and with the Shawn it was a nine week well I left in 25 minutes later cuz I'm approaching the intersection where I'm going to make the turn to go up to our home I drove up on the intersection from hell  it is I came over the little crest of the ridge there time to the intersection I noticed fire trucks and ambulance CHP Sheriff's people standing every bear on all four corners  as I pulled into that left hand turn lane the the thing that caught my eye was one of those yellow body blankets covering a body  about a hundred feet in front of me in the middle of the road  I found myself staring at that body and up to the and noticing that there was a lot of commotion going on they were trying to shut the road down and everybody was running around doing what they they needed to be doing NSS I'm staring at that body and up to the light I noticed Avon could hear a voice yelling at me  and I looked over a my next door neighbor was standing on the curb jumping up and down yelling for me Larry hurry up and get over here hurry up with all the police presence I didn't want to run the light so now I'm kind of waiting for this light to turn looking at her at this body when the light turned I pulled over to where listen to in the roadway cheerleader hitting the window and she said Larry it's it's Sean he's been hit by a car and he's he's dead  I jumped out of my truck  took off running to wear that body was in the roadway and as I was running towards it all I could think about was getting over to him picking him up and holding him and let him know everything was going to be okay Dad's here now just hold on I kept running in the closer I got I started to hear a voice Annette voice starting to tell me to stop just stop but I kept running through that  did I remember just as I turned the corner behind the fire truck  my next door neighbor's husband who was on the fire department that day on duty this came out of nowhere grab me turn me around start to take me back over to my truck  and I remember that he was  he was talking so softly and this guy was a big guy a big big Burly fireman but he was talking right next to my what does arm around me and taking me back over the truck you said there's nothing over here that you need to see or do right now the best thing is for you to get on to the house somebody will be up later and give you the details of what's happened  it has we got back to the truck he motioned instead why don't know why don't you grab your two boys  I looked up and I saw my two younger son standing on the opposite corner I could tell they were fix made it on that body so it took me a second or two to get their attention but once I did I I motion said come on  what are the scenes of this that I'll never forget  there's a frontage road that runs alongside the main room where the roadway were this crash occurred there's a fire truck on that side road back bumper was a couple of firemen sitting with their heads down in their hands  we just have look up at each other at the same time and  I have never seen any more devastated look on anybody's face as I did those firemen that night they were there to save lives and there was nothing they could do you could just see it on their face  I am not it at the end they nodded back put the boys in the truck we drove up to the house we live for houses up from the intersection we were in the driveway within a matter of 25 30 seconds or so and as I was pulling in the drive play I was already running down this list of all the people I need to get inside and start calling right away  yes I got out of my truck to go side made the turn to go inside I looked up and saw our next door neighbor's daughter now standing in the doorway of my home waiting for one of us to get there  I remember sing it up at her and just blurting out that I've got to call my wife you should Larry your wife is already been contacted and there's somebody on their way corrupt  I later learned that there were two phone calls made to my wife by Sean's younger brother Nick in the first phone call when something to the effect of mom shuns me hit by a car they're taking him to the hospital my wife said will you get back down there you find out where they're taking him come back and call me right away so I can get over there  second phone call just a couple of minutes later when something to the effect of mom  Shawnee he broke down crying  Lakeshore neighbors daughter had to take the phone let my wife know that our son was so my wife was working about 20 minutes away in a retail store and any retail stores we have these back offices where they keep the doors locked when you're in there so you can count money do ordering do paperwork that kind of stuff but what you can sneak up on you and you know do whatever they're going to do  she was in that office door closed locked in which she heard set our son had been killed she lost it started screaming  everybody in the store and it was a Fig Store all the way up front they could hear her two other workers took off running towards the back when they got to the back they reach for the handle raising that the door was locked and the key was on a band around my wife's wrist inside they spent the next 15-20 minutes or so trying to get her to calm down enough that she could open the door they just kept saying please please open the door so we can help you  and the reality of it is all she had to do was put her hand behind her and turn the knob and let him in somebody starting the first phone call that I actually made was to the pastor of our church  few live close was there within a minute to have her some when he got there I said could you please do me a favor could you go down to the intersection and see if they've taken Sean's body out of the road I didn't want my wife coming through and seeing our son still laying in the road  and he go down he come back up no Larry wide sinding back down he'd come back up no no not they and I this went on for a while  finally at one point he came up and he's Larry I talked to one of the officers down there and they can't touch the body until the coroner gets there  that night the core was really busy unable to get there in an expedient amount of time so as my wife came through there's our son still laying in the find her was our oldest son being brought home by friend  and I remember standing in my Donna said both pulled up and it was my son's face that caught my attention he was looking at me with strangers look I've ever seen it was like looking through me not at me  but I watched him get out of the car you took a couple of steps towards me and just collapsed according to the police report  this happened at 7:08 in the evening it was about volume 10 9:15 that the corner was finally able to make it out there do their work while sitting in my home somebody came in and got me and said Larry we think the corner just pulled up out front but keep in mind I'm only understanding about every third or fourth word this week the baby but I got up and went to the door introduce myself brought her in she set down the family gathered around her what she begin talking I remember looking up yeah we had lived at this location a number of years everybody knew us we knew everybody but when I looked up at that moment my house the living room dining room kitchen hallway entryway was packed with people I don't know where they came from I didn't know who they were I didn't recognize anybody's face I don't know how they got my home so quick  but you can tell everybody was so you don't turn to lean in to looked over at my wife and she said yeah whatever we got to do let's let's let's do it shut up song may I have to inform you with the only organs that will be worth harvesting from your son will be as eyes  because when you're hit behind walking on the side of the road by a vehicle it's doing 55 miles an hour how much left of you that was also at this point that she started talking about a second
