it's about it's groundbreaking Behavior academic study you have to read it the other one that you could read is this one this is akman and emotion so do you need me to post this or send this to you scientifically studied it is a fundamental study of that area okay alright so let's get going you know the breeding you know the study that I want you to read Masters and Johnson and tell let's get going today talk about an overview of motivation emotion we're going to look at the basics the definitions what is a motive we're going to look at categories of motives we're going to look at that biological factors emotional factors cognitive factors social factors we're going to look at series of motivation Instinct Drive reduction optimal arousal Maslow and then the basic model of motivation that's a lot that's just part of what we're doing here's the AP outline again it's the only 79% I don't know what your AP test is going to look like mostly going to be written I have a feeling so we might want to start practicing recalling and explaining the number one logical basis are fundamental motivation is biological in one context so our physiological motivation what makes us want to eat what makes us want to sleep would be these a logical basis okay well that's easy theories of motivation easy Instinct Drive reduction optimal arousal Theory Z a hunger that's going to be a biological basis is a biological element is not a a need basically we have all kinds of cultural factors related to a hunger and  we can talk about sexual orientation what the latest psychology relates to on that one social motives this is very important the need for other people you're all experiencing those social motives aren't you that you missed seeing your friends and having comfort contact with people that is that are similar to you you've been isolated in your own environment stuck with your family is mostly which I'm sure is trying on some of you lastly you have theories of emotion these are harder this is a little more complex emotion is a physiological issue and you will see that when we go which one of those those are a little bit complex and I do have some really good study guide organizers somewhere on the website probably but I'm not sure and I don't I don't want it to unless I have them and we already did stress so we're not going to really touch on that we could review it or any questions before we move on alrighty the basics of motive motives motivation our behavior is energized and directed we react to our emotions and we react to our drives that's what these will relate to there's a link between our Behavior or motives and our emotions we have basic motives of hunger and thirst are really a biological in nature and they're dressed in the brain you're going to have to no brain mechanism as well as body and endocrine system mechanisms activities motor motives are related to need for stimulation so this particular concept this need for stimulation and arousal you guys are experiencing that aren't you especially the high functioning really gifted students can't help it they are automatically intrinsically motivated they were what to do day out there have to be active all the time does anyone identify with that anybody want to talk about it can you just I like that you can't sit still you have to review your brain is active you're playing video games you're reading your on your phone your restless when you're not doing stuff yes that's a lot especially High high-achieving people we call this when we get to It's called The High and the needs a need for achievement and those are the people who become the doctors in the lawyers and that you know really successful business people because they can't help it there like Workaholics and we some of us have those tell what we call an arousal needs extroverts for sure have it all right definition of motivation quote the factors that influence the initiation the direction the intensity and the Persistence of a Behavior now what this means is we initiate are our goal seeking Behavior we direct our behavior when we channel that behavior we if depending on the intensity and the degree of our energy we are persistent in that behavior till we meet our goal which initiates everything it explains why we do what we do you can never help you know the fundamental issue with with psychology is explaining behavior isn't it and so what we're trying to do this is another deeper explanation for Behavior just like the cognitive reasons for Behavior and are that Haverhill or conditioned reasons for Behavior or biological reasons for behavior these are other motivational issues that we relate to motivation is the key to fight by hunger and sexual desire and the need for achievement so can know the mechanisms of hunger know the mechanism sexual behavior and the need for achievement those just thinks we're going to make sure you know and then emotions what are emotions all about how do they relate to other motives other behaviors a motive is a reason or a purpose for a behavior a motive is a reason or purpose for behaviors and explanation for Behavior some psychologists think motivation is an intervening variable and intervening variable is something that is used to explain the relationship between environmental stimuli and behavioral response I don't like this I read that in a book somewhere and I don't even fully understand or at least I'm not recognizing at the moment so you can ignore that right now sources of motivation now this is very basic are biological factors are autonomic nervous system autonomic meaning we have two parts to the autonomic right what are the two parts anybody with me perfect sympathetic and parasympathetic sympathetic is fight or flight parasympathetic is to slow down so emotions are related to this fundamentally but also the biological factors automatic factors affect our Behavior fundamentally emotional factors Panic fear anger love hatred those are emotions cognitive factors how we perceive things what we think get it what we think relates to our motivations can we be motivated by a thought any answers of course yes we're thinking I have this great idea and then I can direct and sustain your behavior in your action social factors motivated has all the time right now you guys are living from social deprivation you're not able to hang out with your friends you're not able to go and do what you normally would do with other people because afraid of dying and getting sick or getting someone else sick which is very appropriate and in very good that you do worry about those things so against social factors motivate your behavior Behavior Barry very strongly girl say one stronger than the others like the third stronger source of motivation on 112 on one hand you could say biological you're more motivated biologically everyday than anything don't you think you're motivated to eat and to seek food in water and shelter right so maybe biological factor is more prominent or maybe I don't know man I think can you differentiate between these just know they're all factors maybe biological is more prominent cuz we we live it and it's more important than the others and maybe that's it Chris that's how I was answer it there effect affect our Behavior but let's say once you meet this need does it affect your behavior what do you think Chris Christopher Mendes out a way to like me I think so I think that's I think that's a really good way of looking at it so biological first and then you never our hierarchy thing yeah that's a tear drawing butt Maslow's hierarchy is that so biological needs are here emotional needs affiliation needs self-actualization cognitive is actualization social is affiliation get it by Ayo is here so my senses at different times different factors motivate more you say like different points in your life more motivated by different sectors like when your teenager more motivated by social factors but if you're like an eight-year-old you won't really care what people think you oh my God do you have it exactly and in a really in a really good way of summarizing it then I wish I could explain it that well but a central yet I think that's a good way to think of it alright let's see so again you're going to need to be familiar with what are these factors and what how did what does it look like how does it manifest alright series of motivation I'm almost done i-Ready series of motivation the first one is instinct instinct is evolutionary it is prop mating behavior is instinctual animals manifest that pretty clearly we may have like a mother's instinct or something of that nature but mostly we think about Heating and animals Etc with that kind of instincts will motivation this is a big one this is very important says that it's our biology that will focus our behavior and specifically and we're going to go into detail on this one it's food though it's food seeking Behavior okay or nutrients and you'll see that it is forces us to act the optimal arousal this is very very easy says that and then we're not talking about sexual arousal we're talking about just general arousal example what's a good way to explain that your level of energy use the word arousal or energy if you have a high arousal you have plenty of energy to do what your what you need to do if you're a very low level of arousal you're almost asleep do you get the difference somebody is anybody with us and then lastly Maslow's hierarchy is much more complex explanation of all of those needs all of those motives directing our Behavior remember Maslow All Right Moving On let's look at the basic model again we're initiating Behavior we're sustaining our Behavior we're directing our behavior and then we terminate our Behavior which means we stop that behavior because why because whatever that goal was that motivates initiate sustains and directs and once we achieve that goal we terminate you get it so and for example I'm thirsty I am so I'm looking at so I initiate my behavior of seeking water I sustained it I keep looking I'd I wrecked it I find a drinking fountain or it will go to the store and buy a bottle and then once I buy the ball the wall that I terminate my motivation did you get it c-cut again initiated by bodily need search is sustained cuz I couldn't find it quickly I took action and directed my myself my behavior and then I terminated when I attain the goal that's a basic pattern of motivation good luck by model motives I need this is where you have a question between a need and a drive okay so this is where you have to decide what what is a need compared to a drive I need is an internal deficiency going to be food and water get it a drive is an energized state that facilitates the need so first I have a need and then I have a dry live to fulfill that need clear yep you're not rich and sad ride is like the process of getting need the need is a deficit and then the drive is the energizing component so the need creates the drive haha how's that the need creates the drive activate a response which is a behavior and action or series of actions to attain a goal so again a response his behavior so I need energized is a drive Direct Indo behavior and then why the need is very similar to the goal do you follow so needs needs drives responses and goals wow that's wack just didn't translate well to the to this but this was supposed to be a graphic organizer we'll just skip it again I need is a deficiency Drive is a state arousal haha here's a new word homeostatic now let's go on to the next line okay ready okay let's talk about this word homeostasis or I want you to think of what happens when you're starved what happens to your body if it doesn't have nutrients you lose body fat right what what's your energy level when you're starving like 4 days your energy is depleted you sometimes you do if you don't have enough of food you cannot move your those won't work properly that's called a imbalance in homeostasis right now I'm in perfect homeostasis I'm I'm not thirsty I'm not hungry I'm not I'm at Perfect Temperature my bodily functions are running perfectly that's called homeostasis I'm not in deficit in anything clear that's what homie stasis is so now what a knee does a need is a negative homeostatic status it's it's a your urine imbalance you're out of homeostasis you have a deficit get it we drop you off in the desert after 3 hours in the sun you were going to be you're going to have a problem with homeostasis you're going to be deprived of water you're going to need water your anxiety level go up you won't be in homeostasis chill Miss you'll be in anxiety you'll need water okay so this concept of homeostasis is extremely important for the drive reduction theory so I haven't need that is a homeostatic need a biological need and I have a drive that is going to fulfill that need to get it anybody okay thank you can help me to stay in touch with your temperature yes imagine if your body is functioning it's got enough food and water and its stable that's homeostasis if it's problematic and you're in deficit like you haven't eaten or you're deprived Us in some way physiologically then your homeostasis is not in Dallas you're not homeostatic forgettable anyone who's sick is not homeostatic getting off an infection do you get it that's what it means alright okay so internal and external stimuli can affect your behavior what this mean is internal could be homeostasis right I don't like this maybe I'm going to use this thing this ain't working I don't know what to do with that how do you do text box oh right there so again homeostasis would be there and external clues or Thor a stimuli like Vision sometimes external cues make a difference I see a chocolate cake I want to eat it right that's going to stimulate your behavior that's what this means internal it's in my head external I see it it's outside of me where is she Georgia how to say something vadatech hold on Eminem go ahead Georgia I need or what it's more like a hobby what this context is talking about both of those accurate or can can work but what this reference is is something other stimuli Spurs your motivation Chapala it's not motivated by homie internal homeostasis would be this reason so I'm not hungry I just see a delicious piece of cake and I want to eat it so if you're like actively seeking if you're probably an internal mode patient vs. It's an external incentive is a little bit different it's something that an incentive increases motivation so maybe you're a little hungry but then you see a chocolate cake that's beautiful you're going to be more motivated to eat that chocolate cake it's more about a visual stimuli that is not necessary home a homeostatic need that's what they're I think they're talking about Santa value of something so again we are motivated by incentives I am going to be friendly to people because I want friends to follow so my friendly behave is going to motivate me to be friendly because of my goal what's my goal more friends to get it so if you get an incentive to your goal seek did you get it a reward you follow it's kind of like a one of these cycle things one thing leads to the other that leads to the other that you know keeps going and this I can't draw anyway incentive value of something is it is the reward you get from seeking a particular goal it's it's like again it's a reward is an incentive you got it Calia okay erase all that we're going to go 2 more minutes primary motives are basic biological survival Hunger any questions primary motives by Logic survival Hunger is an example to stimulus motives this is great this would be people who need let's those would be beautifulest that's Morris right now on those would be people who need stimulation arousal aerosol Noah Rao is all arousal again I can't sit still I have to be doing something I like I like might be keeping my mind occupied you know I like to ride my bike I see things all the time that's what this would be this movie considered stimulus needs or motives is it a need is this an accurate use of the for need oh wait I've got y'all mood it don't I unmuting you all that want to be so is this a need no it's technically not I need why it's not this very good it's not necessary for survival so that's kind of a misnomer activity Cube exploration manipulation physical contact not necessary for survival what if you need all those things to maintain like a mental homeostatic state it is but it's they don't use the word the term homeostatic as a mental state it's only a physical needed for survival only supposed to be securely biologic biological self isolation for example still technically would be in homeostasis yes it's not accurate to call it a homeostatic problems unless you're starving or so it it you will you could have anxiety you will have stress aminos her manifestations of it you could have a disorder but you have these reasons for for your behavior and  high or really explains it we have need for affiliation it's not a physiological need do you get it that's the idea. first one what was the first motor primary and then stiff motives and then secondary motives affiliation status security learned motives things that are rewarding but they're not needs there's some crossover you really could do a little bit of a three-way Venn diagram couldn't you Mary motives stimulus motives in secondary we can put secondary colors need for affiliation what's the difference secondary and stimulus these are fundamentally for stimuli and these are mixed bag it's like an achievement this one secondary motives are not primary motives okay so that's one idea it's not physical survival and it's not necessarily stimulus but there is crossover it would you say stimulus motives are like innate stimulus needs and then secretary motives are learned stimulus me I think it would be more a route to stay there all this this is learned also stimulus needs could be learned everything is learned according to the behaviorist isn't it the Highway 2 and 3 be different this is pure stimulus versus the other one is a little mixed more conceptual and idea ideas rather than actual stimulation it's stimulation is more narrow this is more off Broad so really it would be primary goals or motive give me a list and then probably secondary and stimulus do you get it cuz there's some crossover here follow somewhat like a sphere a stimulus yes but is it going to motivate do you people think they are motivated to avoid fear right so then that way it's similar but it's not like I need to be scared and I like to be scared and it motivates me to get it that's my way of processing it is achievement is a Cheeseman stimulus it can be okay what is it I am motivated because I want to be famous that's achieved isn't it yeah but it's it's is it typically considered stimulus Maybe but those are the basic ideas just know what is a stimulus motive the reason why you have to know is that if you work can be motivated with your desire for stimulation that's the big idea here you can also be motive but motivated by other things not just stimulus but it does overlap make money yes we would call that and instead money is considered a secondary motive it is an incentive good alright Drive reduction theory this is going to be again what's a drive or need sorry right you need it for survival so Drive reduction is going to relate to physiological elements specifically hunger motivation so think of drive-reduction hunger make this one of the key terms or or if you're going to if you're going to do a a let's say you're going to ride a study guide for so Drive reduction you're going to include hunger motivation and it's going to be a homeostasis Coolidge okay anyways snowflake an ear for waxing reduce need for another what what's the drive reduction is specifically it's hunger motivation so learn what are the aspects of hunger that are physiological we engage in that behavior to reduce that need wee wee The more increase in your motivation to find water pushes your motivation your behavior a drive is the aroused made it to State what causes this drive what causes the need is dehydration what happens do this it's called homeostasis so your dehydration is a need because it ruins your homeostasis you're not your body is in crisis your body is in deficit and so there for you have a which causes the drive in the longer you have this need the more you're going to push for the drive to fill that need all right well I hope you get it we're going to finish up we already talked briefly about the Instinct Theory there's a slide on it where is our perio homeostasis is Drive reduction okay so I'm going to add this okay so this is for sure Drive reduction and let's talk about the mat mechanisms for it the mechanisms are Hunger again external and internal factors but look at this as go back liver right liver affect your hunger that fits into homeostasis and your job is to know how helfrich doubtful he should have things for eating behaviors and they they love testing you on this so make sure you get as much of this as you can what are factors that cause you to be hungry number one in your stomach when your stomach is empty it constricts and it sends signals to your brain that says you're you better fill me fill your tummy eat eat eat right what stomach send signal to your brain what part of the brain by the way anybody is it the hypothalamus that's right the hypothalamus okay so the stomach sends signals to the the hypothalamus and then another way is glucose level in the blood mary your your body runs on glucose and it goes to the cells and things of that nature so again it is your blood level your glucose level in your blood is measured by the hypothalamus also hypoglycemia is low blood sugar glycemia which some of you should know about is high blood sugar high her means you have too much blood sugar everybody know it happens to you and I'll unmute you if you want to respond and do I know what happens to your body when you have too much sugar ketoacidosis when you have too much blood sugar that's my P the name for it but what happens to your body was too much blood sugar but then it'll make it intermittent and stored as okay so you get that is that what you're saying insulin production gets super wack so you let you have the physiological ramifications till hypo is low hyper is high so what are the long-term effects of hyperglycemia anybody know diabetes diabetes is a that's a side effect of diabetes what happens to people who are diabetic that don't control their blood sugar what happens to him well that's a side effect but what is the sugar do to their body they can't process to sugar so let me just tell you I don't know what that means but it kills the on the capillary level it kills the the kills the cellular membrane so for example there's a blood vessel and these are cells that are lining the tissue right. these are made of cells the blood brings nutrients to the tissues in the cells and there's a osmosis and a transference right yes member that oxygen goes in glucose does in and waste goes out right yes well what happens is if this is the Long View of the cell membrane is that your cap you're the smallest tiniest blood vessels break and they lose their their structure because of the sugar the sugar breaks down the capillary walls and it doesn't allow for the diffusion the in and out to the cell and so tissue starts to die with too much sugar and so happens with people with diabetic diabetic diabetes they go blind because your eyes are full of your retina and areas capillaries until your your vision deteriorate your limbs like your toes etcetera when they get injured they can't heal because there's no transference of the the nutrients in in the blood and not blood but the what is the waste products of the cell are not able to be cleaned with the blood and so then the tissue dies it gets gangrene and then it poisons the the blood and then you die so hyperglycemia long-term kills tissue and then hypoglycemia when you were have low blood sugar you also died because your body shuts down that's when you die from a a coma or in you know lack of sugar Eufaula anyway these are important elements to this hunger motivation and homeostasis again stomach size we get contractions when it's empty the liver again send signals in the blood I'm almost done signals from the liver through the blood to the what's the hormones the endocrine system also relates to it the hypothalamus is fundamentally in there it is right there again the hypothalamus this is very important rates look at this you don't want to live without a hypothalamus regulate your motivation for thirst hunger and sexual behavior it is very sensitive to the blood sugar receive neural messages from the liver one part of the one part of the hypothalamus there's two parts so the hypothalamus has two parts one and two one part signals feeding the other signals cessation okay so feeding is one and then stopping or cessation is to any questions on hypothalamus any questions on hypothalamus know okay so again thirst hunger sexual behavior is is directed by the hypothalamus its sensitive to neural messaging from the liver Etc it's it's signals the feeding system if you want to stop eating get rid of your hypothalamus damaged the part that starts the eating and that's what this looks like this skinny rat and fat rat what happened to them well the hunger feeling part of the hypothalamus was called the lateral hypothalamus when electrified causes animals to eat and secretes appetite stimulating hormones if destroyed there's no eating Mary Jane causes hypothalamic response is called the munchies and that's why it affects the hypothalamus that interesting you guys great are you still muted where are you ventromedial hypothalamus basically relates to satiety satiety means feelings of honest if destroyed then all you do is you overeat appetite-suppressing hormones originate in the ventromedial hypothalamus ventromedial meems bottom any questions on the two parts of the hypothalamus we got the lateral and the ventro initiating and satiety yeah when we're talking about hungry you said there is internal and external factors you see a chocolate cake in your hungry or smell can also or I guess touch if your find the lateral is like the desire to eat yes and then the ventral ventral is the satiety satiety morbid neuropeptide another part 3 part paraventricular nucleus affect hunger blood sugar level specific but this will never be on an AP test but the hypothalamus will okay you don't need to know it to that extreme degree but if you do of course you're going to get a higher score if you can use those accurately glucagon peptide eye this is another one causes eating to cease that's in your hypothalamus also that triggers this and it's released in your intestines so here's
