okay welcome back this is memory part 2 we're talking about brain areas and I want to point out this is the limbic system right there there is the amygdala hypothalamus is there and the hippocampus is right there is two pieces this is where Lots about memories is really important if you if you can't remember something it's probably cuz the hippocampus didn't process in enough people with Alzheimer's have difficulty with the hippocampus in  shrinks and is much smaller degenerative Lee people with dementia have problem with hippocampus you can't process new memories without the hippocampus you can retrieve old memories and that's why a lot of Alzheimer's patients have it their hippocampus is disintegrating we know a lot about memory and anatomy of the from brain mapping remember where they would leave in a part of the brain and or they would stimulate the part of the brain and see what part of the body would respond to it loss of that brain mapping I've got a tremendous amount about brain the brain and how it works there still a lot we don't know but they learned is electroconvulsive shock therapy connect electrodes to the brain and jolted with and that what that would do they found with that memory is located throughout the cortex was different parts of the cortex would be damaged by these electric shocks and there would be a corresponding difficulty with memory as a result and so we know a lot about the brain how the brain works how memory works with these different experiments in brain mapping they've done again hippocampus totally important again salamis if there was a way I could draw it but basically what happens is you get can I do that you get the information comes from the body and it goes through the spinal cord right spinal cord and gets to the brain it's going to go through Thalamus first and the hippocampus second hippocampus and then it's going to be stored in the cortex can you see that you probably can't it looks terrible anyway gets so what we get is the thalamus switching station hippocampus in the limbic system and then the storage in to the cortex again the thalamus is the switching switching station short-term to long-term campus and the thalamus to get there again damage to the hippocampus get in tiro grade Amnesia you know 50 First Dates means after the the injury you can't make new memory and so that's anterograde after the fact you can't make new memory Alzheimer's anterograde generally the opposite is retrograde I can't recall who I know what I am now and I can remember things now but know but this is as good as we can do today I said process sometimes we feel in our gaps of memory sometimes we make things up we go we'll this must have happened we get pseudo or false memories that's going to be Loftus you really study on her eye witness testimony and then recovered memories make sure you know Loftus is always important again through the schema we have all these things called patterns of Association we connect everything to some that is already there so I can Network model or scheme again Memory aids chunking information adding or linking two to three concepts highlighting available on this year okay so you asked yourself all right so what relates to parallel or distributed processing means there's a lot of processing going on you what would you do well I would relate it to episodic why well because went with episodic you have a lot of processing hear this site in the smells and the sounds all of those are related to how memory is distributed distributed processing or that we have a lot of things going on at once so I would relate that to episodic or I would relay short term memory I would relate that to encoding in short-term and chunking right so what did you try to do as you make connections choking is connected to short-term memory and flies it connected because short-term memory is in this is a main idea short-term memory is of short duration so can you use the strategy you will be able to remember yo more information did you get it all right so that's what you would do you would connecting this material chunky information procedural memory is long-term declarative memory declarative memory is information you know procedural is how old do you think skill information declarative process how to do stuff declarative semantic and episodic I know the meaning of words and I remember the story declared I remember what happened episodic is what happened you follow this is very important declarative semantic meaning meaning the meaning of words and episodic meaning what happened here I got a procedural these are skills again procedural is ski learn how to tie your shoes some of you episodic experiences easy
