okay well welcome back to the bunker this is part 3 of American foreign policy this we're going to talk about the Spanish-American war and so the cause of again yellow journalism fundamentals Mets in the de lome letter those three of the big big issues as well as Americans underlying attitude that we want a overseas possessions and if you look at the Philippines again the Philippines are in very very strategic location right here right next to China right near Japan that would facilitate and again Guam is here another Spanish possession so the Spanish-American war was a choice by the Americans and there's a huge underlying attitude which was we want the Philippines and we're going to do it tanks provoked this war very similar to the Mexican-American war in terms of our preconceived notions where we wanna territory we wanted our way and we were going to stop at nothing to get it so that that would be at very easy interpretation to argue Spain is very weak losing ground since you know they lost the Mexican Independence and round 1820 Latin America 1820 so there week they had to Bastille Puerto Rico Philippines Guam and then a couple places in Africa but they're on the downhill declined since the 1820s again Americans we've had her eyes on cue and they got some cool toys there they have a lot of teeth do we have go to the map sorry they are right off the coast of tobacco they have a face with a captive audience had slavery up until you're very recently in the 1850s or 1870s so that there's they're like the United States have been drooling over Cuba for years and years we want we want to get involved with Cuba for a long time ever the hosted Manifesto we're before the Civil War they were thinking of taking Cuba and making into three or four slave states and I didn't happen of course we had the Republicans won the 1860 election and then threw that away Independence for a long time a series of uprisings 1860s 1895 and they're worse in the middle of one when the Americans get involved Americans wanted Cuban Independence we were looking for it was saying Viva Cuba Cuba Libre the freedom fighter fighter Jose Marti he was a Cuban poet he was a leader he was part of the Guerrilla movement in in Cuba and come to United States and there's a great song called one ton amera we should really play for you he says man loves Liberty even if he does not know that he loves it is driven by it and flees from it where it does not Marty was afraid of American involvement did he went to New York to try to get party cats American Support and it's like there's a great song called what kind of meta which is classic where's the song a video let's see this work skip this ad is this a good one, what the heck we getting these that's it I don't know if you can see this totally a classic Cuban imagery this is there. great song okay so McKinley is president when we declare war on Spain and he is pressured by these why did yellow journalism that you battleship Maine blows up in Havana Harbor and then the de lome letter recall he will be assassinated 1901 and TR will take over here's him Kenny getting assassinated by Leon's laws he was an anarchist fun fact okay yellow journalism yellow journalism is associated with The Sensational newspaper articles that take a grain of Truth and it exploded out of exaggeration sensationalized very radical crazy dramatic stories it very close to what we call fake news I hear you know if you listen to Trump everybody is exaggerating his problems well in this Spanish American war they were exaggerating it for Trump date there now exaggerating he is that bad but that's just go back to the Spanish-American War this is called the yellow kid yellow kid was what they named yellow journalism after they the first coloring in can you see him there the first coloring of of what the heck am I doing the first coloring in newspapers was God I hope this is working anyway this was the yellow kid the first color magazine newspaper ink they had was yellow and so he was a street urchins Urchins in the Gilded Age and they were producing his cards so you can find this in the history of cartoons he's called the yellow kid he lived in he was a homeless kid in the in New York slums big big deal alright this is an example of yellow journalism exaggerated stories the first one here was a American woman was strip-searched by Spanish Nationals in Cuba Spanish officials cup officials will the reality was yeah that was true but it wasn't with these men and it wasn't portrayed it is and it's here it's here it's portrayed as a are poor American white women is bought being violent Phillies nasty Spanish man and then in that wasn't the case it was completely appropriate you female Customs agents etcetera and then here's this is dehumanizing the enemy Spain seen as a brute the Spanish brute a monster non-white like a gorilla dripping blood of American innocent Americans and again this is referenced by the battleship Maine this is provoked outrage that Spain is responsible and that the Spanish monsters and it's okay to kill a monster so again exaggerating the problems yellow journalism are these these are the two most famous yellow Journal and you got to know their example and you can remember if you remember Pulitzer the Pulitzer Prize as this guy and then William Randolph Hearst both of them were masters of yellow journalism they wanted to sensation they wanted to sell newspapers and then you know a war nothing sells better than war and they exaggerated the problems and really reinforced the popular Hysteria that Spain is attacking the United States and which which if you look at the facts Spain has no interest in fighting United States pain is weeks pain is like what are we we don't want to fight the Americans you know if so these guys are responsible for shaping public opinion kind of like your Twitter and Facebook and all these exaggeration horrible falsehoods being propagated the de lome letter is the other big one world alone was a Spanish Ambassador and he sent no criticizing McKinley the course McKinley didn't really want to make a deal about it but it was taken by the yellow press and exaggerated in an exploded on on the newspapers and again so now the Spanish have insulted the Americans and so we need to avenge our honor and support the war effort popular opinion was in impacted by all of these things the battleship Maine explodes in The Havana Harbor and they blame that again on the Spanish the Spanish had no recent Noah want to attack the American the best historians the best guess is that it was a spontaneous combustion by the by the in the Powder Magazine the storage areas on the ship and so no evidence of any kind of terrorism but yet here's the New York Journal again a yellow newspaper yellow journalism pret spreading the rumor spreading the allegations that it was a bomb on a torpedo that killed the Americans here's another one crisis is at hand Spanish treachery extra McKinley suspicious of Spanish plot again no no evidence we are pushed into war he does declare war and basically we invade the Cubans by the way their argument is that the Cubans were almost winning in the Americans come at the very last second in Santiago right over here and this is where you get sad Battle of San Juan Hill Yoshi battles most of the all of the rest of the island was already dominated by the Spanish excuse me by the Cuban revolutionaries or Independents people in so we come in at the last second and the Cubans will not like what happens when we decide to stay and take over their resources we take up Puerto Rico out right from Spain and they are still a protectorate Ricans are American citizens they are not a state but they do have some representation in Congress again Teddy Roosevelt becomes a Great Hero these years at actual picture of him did show great courage and bravery killed man with his own hand etcetera this is by the way propaganda there were no horses he had a horse but none of his men had horse and it was a fundamentally propaganda but he was a hero and he did serve and he has to be getting gotten recognition for that or giving recognition last week his Battle of New Orleans remember we talked about that that something propels him to the the the fame of national Fame in that was this battle of San Juan Hill meanwhile in the Philippines it was a preconcerted attack pre-planned attack do we was sent out with orders that when he we were they were to find that America in Spain we're at War he was to sail directly to Manila and destroyed the Spanish Fleet what's interesting about this is Spain probably didn't know at least the Spanish weed in Philippines didn't know or hasn't been declared it's kind of like Pearl Harbor if you think of it that way Pearl Harbor they attacked without warning and we attacked the Spanish Fleet in Manila without warning. Many in the story is really like to support that idea but it's kind of true we sailed in that they I don't think they had an even a chance to be interesting to see what history teachers have to say about it Mr Moss is a naval historian so he he may know I might have to call him anyway so Spanish we defeat the Spanish Fleet in Manila and we take over the Philippines a protectorate also has a colony the Treaty of Paris and never Treaty of Paris kids always ask why are there so many treaties of Paris Paris on the France World Player they had great influence and so they were brokering a lot of deals they're the main power in in Europe one of the strongest powers in Europe and they broke or a number of deal so I think that might be a good example there could be other explanations don't know might ask to some other historians moving on so we get Cuba is gets Independence Puerto Rico Guam and the Philippines become American possessions why is Puerto Rico important look at this map it's right here at the front of the Caribbean spirits TJ you can protect the future Canal it's a kind of a big barrier so it's extremely important location we have Naval bases there fun fact how we the Teller Amendment stated that United States was not going to keep the Cuba as a possession we're not going to keep YouTube as a possession so that's good news isn't it that we're not going to that tells the Cuban people we're really not in it for self-interest and economic gain or territorial gain we're just here to help get their independence then after the independent the war for independence or after Cuba comes Independence we impose Platt Amendment on Cuba which basically said Cuba could not make treaties with foreign countries the US was allowed to intervene in Cuban Affairs Cuba could not go into debt us land on the island for a navy base which will be called one tana Mobay which we still were there Shiva wasn't protect her and she could not make treaties with other countries is it true of an independent yes or no in the answer is it's a mixed bag of course they have some Independence unless we don't like what they're doing then there's no one dependent so there's no it's really a pup government what do we want in Cuba well we want the tobacco and sugar cane in Fruit American business interests will move to Cuba and will dominate wealthy Lane donors in Cuban population with me very very poor in very very mixed in terms of racially meanwhile in the Philippines we have the freedom fighter movement this Rebel movement the guy named aguinaldo Aldo to liberate us from we were fighting the Spanish before the Americans got here and there's a picture you can see a dog in although with seiller the Americans are here to help and then we say well leaving you are Little Brown Brothers need help and we are here to teach you how to be independent aguinaldo didn't really like it he resisted and we have a with the Filipinos and this is kind of interesting we have between 70 and 120000 troops will be sent to the to the Philippines we will have about 4,000 Americans will be killed 20000 between 20 and 50 thousand Filipinos will die it last three years it's extremely repressive and bloody it is we do ethnic cleansing Roundup Filipinos and put them in concentration camps we do free fire zones killing people it's very bloody very racist and it's not very good for the Americans in terms of another black eye how we treat indigenous peoples again we must have no Scruples about exterminator this other race standing in the way of progress and Enlightenment and it was a very repressive bloody war we eventually will pacify aguinaldo will be under American control we control the Philippines all the way till 1948 we will be in control of the Philippines when the Japanese will invade in World War II and it's an ongoing relationship positive on one hand but there were a lot of criticisms that we do keep the Philippines but I think there's a very strong positive attitude towards the Philippine lots of Filipinos will move to the United States work in the marriage in the United States Navy San Diego for example has a large Filipino population that began at The Taking of the Philippines last week William Howard Taft becomes the governor-general basically of the Philippines he was beloved by the Philippine people there's lots of positive elements and he did good good service there organizing their legal codes and things of that nature calf did serve there must have been a very difficult program and lastly we have this anti-imperial league about the anti-imperialism league and I can't imagine anyone is still watching this is now an hour and a half of three videos that I've been making on just this part of the 4 Impala but so anti-imperialism Lee we have people like Mark Twain Samuel Gompers Andrew Carnegie William Jennings Bryan suggesting that it's wrong for America to have a colonies and there are different motives first of all Carnegie has a conscience and he says no we shouldn't be dominating other countries Mark Twain is suggesting it's undemocratic for Americans to take colonies golfers is suggesting that is too many immigrants will come and compete with the Americans for jobs and so they each have their own motives what's interesting is there was a discussion about it I think fundamentally they were racist arguments and we don't want these foreigners here and taking jobs Etc here's one more little from Carnegie no man was ever created good enough to own another no nation was ever created good enough to own another which is really altruistic wonderful attitude too bad, he didn't use those attitudes towards his own workers Hammond decent wage but those are all issues so race racial issues about keeping him keeping colonies and then of course there moral issue 1 country controlling another the winner is going to be social Darwinism to say yeah it's better that we keep these because someone else will take these colonies someone else could take the colonies here's McKinley Uncle Sam and McKinley is fitting him for his Empire Haley by William McKinley dismissive Aunt Imperial protest of reformers so again the social darwinists when this guy is a piece of work Alfred Albert J Beveridge again look at this it is racial God has not been preparing the English speak speaking into tonic people's for a thousand years for nothing but Vain and idle self-contemplation know he has made us the master organizers of the world to establish system where chaos Reigns he is given its Spirit to the progress to overwhelm the forces of reaction throughout the Earth we must take on our White Man's Burden that's what this mean the racist burden to show the brown people how to live and that's why it's okay that we take territory meanwhile we still have the open door policy that's what we're relating this to Open Door policies interesting is known as the sick man of Asia China if you look at this cartoon was carved up by all of these different countries this is Edward this is Roosevelt this is Mikado of Japan Nicholas II of number which is a Fred's and Wilhelm II of Germany and what this means is that China we we were getting involved the different parts of China these things called spheres of influence each one of these countries was taking a little chunk of China was controlling it Spears of influence with almost total control only works one country was prohibiting the other countries from Trading from that area John Hay the Secretary of State by the way he used to work for Lincoln as his assistant wrote a series of policy comments or commentaries that were known as the open door notes and he said it's wrong for one country to prohibit another car trading in any part of China and he said you know the United States would safeguard for the world the principles of equal impartial trade with all parts of the Chinese Empire well that's just dandy isn't it we can United States the same who can trade where I think it's a good idea free trade but you know it's kind of stepping over the bounds what right do we have to tell anyone about any but anything and so this is what John Hay was proposing and that turns into what we call in the open door policy that all parts of China should be open to all parts of the any country that wants to trade meanwhile the Boxer Rebellion in China in Chinese nationalist resent foreign control of their country and they rise up the boxers and what's interesting about this look at this is the European powers fighting this is supposed to be the Chinese but isn't this funny this is the motif of the Japanese the red the Rising Sun and these are Japanese style costumes so that kind of shows an insensitivity but who were the boxers the boxers were Chinese nationalist who wanted power for China in China meanwhile the boxes will be defeated by multinational force and that's what this represents and China will remain weak and all the way through World War II okay we're going to stop now because we're going to get in to Theodore Roosevelt's foreign policy and that's a whole nother story about self so I will look for part for thanks
