unit again the focus that I'd like you to pay attention to is comparing how we go from early expansion which is within the continental United States to how we go overseas and that's a really good way to organize all this information if you can compare the early American program to the later American program you can see a lot of similarities and lot of attitude snake fall together that's a neat they're taking care of fundamental racist attitudes underlying American expansion as well as European expansion for that matter and here's some buzzwords when you see this term Anglo-Saxon that's that's a buzzword for race racism here's a quote god with infinite wisdom and skill is training the Anglo-Saxon race for the final competition in the competition of the races again totally problematic but again it is part of our you can say this is similar to early America and America expansion elements again there's a pattern we will intervene in weaker Nations this is another pattern we will intervene and weaker Nations when we have an economic or a business interest fundamentals if it's not a economic interest we didn't really have much you know we did we weren't there to change the world generally have definitely not our government our government becomes involved when it's an economic interest sometimes it was political you know we used to talk about Bush's National Security strategy by going into Iraq one of the reasons he wanted to go to Iraq was to plant a democracy in the Middle East and maybe that was a noble cause maybe that was righteous maybe it wasn't but it was a fiasco none the less there was economic interest oil yeah we see that with the first Bush Iraq War that was a oil threatening the oil in Kuwait excetera but you'll notice Hawaii chuba Philippines China Colombia and Panama Nicaragua Mexico all of these will relate economic interests of the United States I always show this map and this is very important matter if you look at it you see the United States is over here and of course Africa's completely carved up if you look at the the key here you see there this is Belgium Great Britain with all the colors down at the bottom that tells.you Africa was in play was totally gobbled up Asia is being divided Australia India is controlled by England France right here in McCall that French Indochina Korea was controlled by Japan Germany is got two parts of Africa France parts of Africa you know the Italians Libya Etc Italians over in Somalia and so United States is coming late to the imperialist game at 19 100 we barely have claims over the Philippines with the Spanish-American War we get Guam over here that some of these islands in the Pacific and then where the protectorate over Cuba as well as we took territory of specifically Puerto Rico and so the point I make with this map again is we are new to the Imperial game but we didn't want to be left out even people like country like Belgium are coming late to the game countries like the Netherlands have been around in France and England all of them had possession United States won here's a document from the Secretary of State 1898 and the McKinley is saying the output of the United States manufacturers developed by the remarkable in genius an industrial scale of our people has reached the point of large excess above the demand of Home consumption under this under these circumstances it is not surprising that greater interest should be exhibited among our manufacturers in Economist in the large band of foreign markets for American good with again this is talking is our our expansion of our economy through manufacturing has produced tons of surplus is extra Goods until what does that mean Surplus Goods we need places to sell it we need to support our infrastructure and trade overseas and that's fundamental so we can we have in just realized we have markets and we need to sell them overseas in order to sell Goods overseas we need a Navy because look at we're going to China we're going to Europe from a Latin America and the rules of the day was strong Navy strong maybe and that's where we come to Alfred T Mohan Alfred T Mohan was a Commodore he was an admiral and he was a staunch imperialist he said we need a strong Navy to support our trade and we needed calling stops we need repair facility we need a permanent basis and so he's going to be you know the Godfather of American imperialism and of course why do we care about this is because who who basically paid attention to Alfred T Mohan was TR Theodore Roosevelt he becomes assistant Secretary of the Navy and he demands that this book mahan's book the influence of seapower on History which is one of the key terms you have to know he had that sent to every ship in every captain in the fleet be cut in ER was a fundamental imperialist and he wanted a strong Navy and strong foreign policy so that the Americans kid have a greater power in the world and Hebrew we had that vision of in Hawaii and the Samoan Islands and the Philippines that's going to facilitate trade throughout the Pacific and what a surprise we end up taking over the Hawaiian Islands the Samoan Islands the
