welcome back sorry for that I'm having a bad day but we're going through this so let's just get get get into it so we are want to show you a document that's in the the matter right below the video okay in the resources page and this is really going to help explain everything it's called The Voice place of Theodore Roosevelt and you'll see it it's it's his eighth synthesis of a lot of readings that I've done in the past and it's a really good document I think to help you understand this so can I go through this with you if you would allow me that be ideal you can learn so much from this document Theodore Roosevelt's presidency he was aggressive vindictive he was abrupt and stormi hit hard driving active personalities very thoughtful very strategic early life Hilo school and education as a child he was a sickly child frail kind of kid and but his parents were very very wealthy. Jyoti it cetera and he felt that he was going to die if he didn't fortify his body and his father was a big influence in this and so he started working out working out working out the manly sport of hunting in boxing in horseback riding in physical fitness and etc etc he he became a physically fit kind of a athletic specimen always had to be doing something he was a gifted person he I'm had it just incredible energy he an incredible mind intelligence he traveled with the family extensively have such a privileged wife he had different interests philosophy botany Zoo he religion he read extensively he was kind of awkward he was you as weird today I think he probably would be can probably be on the Spectrum for autism very very high funk would be at the thought that it wouldn't be wouldn't surprise me if that was the case because he did have this wonderful superb intellect but a little personality he was encouraged by his parents he always worked ahead he was self-motivated TR had poetry fiction Sports all around him quote results many-sided writings would prove an invaluable resource store the presidency passionately linking him as Hunters naturalist bird lovers historians biographers conservationist Educators sailor soldiers and sportsman everything was of interest to him I think that is that's how a lot about this guy's personality this was from the French Ambassador his early career he was a police commissioner he met Jacob Riis he worked in the Lower East Side he was overseeing the police department there he he gets elected to the State Assembly he entered Politics as a Republican and he gets involved with the a lot of with the different you know Republican and Democrat politicians there they're up in Albany result begins to grow a social conscience he believed that they taught what they taught Harvard he believed in laissez-faire economics and then he went to the Lower East Side then he saw the tenements and he met with golfers in the tenement sweatshops quote in one tenement house 15 family crowded into the three floors fathers mothers and children were at work stripping drying wrapping cigars from 6 in the morning until midnight in the yard a breeding ground disease with no drain to a sewer lair ounce of tobacco decaying tobacco another building house 98 people from 20 families with several families living and working together when one room everywhere piles of tobacco and feted tobacco scraps litter the floors filling the air with an overwhelming stats the hallways were so dark and gloomy and even midday it seem like night so he goes from high society you being exposed to these horrible conditions and he grows a conscience this was while he was in New York civil service reform in New York here's a great quote he thrived in The Cauldron functioning best when traumatic moral issues were at stake he fought with gusto against fraud and Corruption PR said quote words with me or instruments to Galvanize the emotions of the people in Spirited battles for reform there is little use of the being whose tepid Souls knows nothing of the great generous emotion of high Pride the stern believe the lofty enthusiasm of The Men Who quell the storm and ride the Thunder when his critics fought back he relished the fight believing that quote only through Strife through hard and dangerous Endeavor wood Victory be did you see his personality coming out in here he just likes the escapades he wants to get involved and he's got a huge huge energy to do these and that was a profound message can I give you a one fun story about him how he gets to be Secretary of War or secretary vice presidents use me so we should have this week we did talk about this in in the other area but I want to show you the Rough Riders for a minute the Rough Riders were Theodore Roosevelt's men they were a huge man that he recruited for the Spanish-American War well before he was in the Spanish-American War he was a c Secretary of the Navy in McKinley's Administration and he saw the work coming he was a hawk he was a aggressive aggressive imperialist he saw the work coming and as he's at Kateri the Navy you know he supports Alfred T Mohan and the Great White Fleet etcetera he sends do we to go and prepare for the Spanish word American War by invading the Philippines GE stock any resigns from the Navy department and starts his own unit called the Rough Riders and again the Rough Riders Propel Roosevelt into the war which propels him into the national conscience because he gets lots of publicity as a hero it's okay this is a cowboy this guy was an actual Cowboy he had a ranch in the Dakota is it set and he was so he leaves government life goes to fight because it's the Great Adventure and then he comes back and he runs for governor at New York State because he's so popular he wins so he wins governor and he starts reforming Progressive reform he wants to get rid of the corruption of the political machines in the bosses and they start ruining the machine Roscoe conkling Roscoe conkling Roscoe conkling was but in charge of the political machine in New York state and he was the Republican and so they are tons of trucks just like Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall the Republicans were very similarly corrupt not as blatant not New York City but all through the other parts of the state and so PR now becomes governor and he starts changing things and ruining things it's so what Roscoe conkling did he said well we got to get rid of TR let's get rid of TR because he's too much of a he's too much of a what the heck is all that how do I get there well anyway, doesn't like ER because he's a reformer so he says how can we get rid of TR this crazy cow let's put them in vice president if the vice president the election 1900 nobody cares what the vice president does the vice president is only important when the president dies so Oakland and the other political bosses of New York cities in New York state said let's get him and put him in where he can't do any damage and they send them to the vice presidency and he accepts and and McKinley wins okay then McKinley is assassinated and Roscoe conkling and in the other Republicans look at TR it said oh my God now this Cowboy is President and so and then he disrupts the whole system and does things his way caring about those main things remember we talked about his reforms you know regulating business regulating food regulated railroads helping the unions conserving natural resources and then he leaves office and he he puts William Howard Taft in his spot he's the successor now that's all well and good and by the way this document has all of this and you look at it this section over here is his administration with all the details it's a really good study guide right trust-busting consumers foreign policy we're not doing foreign policy this one but we did it on another one all right so let's quickly do the election of 1912 go from there here's The Break-Up Catholics different not as projector Progressive TR went away and came back when he heard that can show was removed from the Taft Administration member Pinchot and the conservation the forestry service this guy Ballinger who was the new Secretary of the Interior for Taft allowed mines to open up into these preserved areas these Forest Lumbers Lumber industry Etc & Sew pink shows gets complains about it he goes to the newspapers makes a big stink and no doubt of that public pressure worked so Taft fired him for insubordination and first thing pincho does writes a letter to tr it says look what they've done to us they ruined the the conservation movement that they fired me and he persuades this is one of the reasons that TR is persuaded to go 2 I'm sorry this terrible we have to edit this out anyway it's one of the reasons that TR comes out of retirement and runs for election in 1912
