Parent & Family Engagement Policy 2022-2023

Point Loma High School has developed a written parent & family engagement policy with input from parents.

  • PLHS holds meetings throughout the school year in order to receive parent input and encourage parent involvement. The Point Loma High School School Site Council (SSC) and English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) are the primary parent and community groups who provide input on the following topics:
    • Improving communication between the school and home
    • Reviewing and discussing student data and progress toward the Single Plan for Student Achievement
    • Increasing parental involvement from under-represented populations of students
    • Evaluating the effectiveness of the school’s parent involvement policy to increase parent participation
    • Providing training programs for parents to help parents support and work with their children at home and at school

It has distributed the policy to all parents and guardians.

  • The Parent & Family Engagement Policy is available on our school website.

This policy describes the means for carrying out parent and family engagement requirements pursuant to ESSA Section 1116(c).  To involve parents the following practices have been established:

The school convenes an annual meeting to inform parents about the right of parents to be involved in the school program.

Point Loma High School has an annual Open House for all parents and guardians to meet their child’s teachers. Prior to classroom visitations, the principal hosts the PLHS Principal Welcome Meeting where parents are informed about and encouraged to be involved in the school program.

The school offers a flexible number of meetings for parents, such as meetings in the morning or evening. Add details about the meetings in the box below:

PLHS offers meetings throughout the school year with SSC, ELAC, Coffee with Counselors, PLHS Pointer Association, and IGC at various times of the day as agreed upon by the members of the committees. Meetings may be conducted virtually during the COVID-19 restrictions.

The school involves parents of students in an organized, ongoing, and timely way, in the planning, review, and improvement of the school’s programs and the parental involvement policy.  How does the school involve parents?

Point Loma High School SSC and ELAC meet regularly. Meeting dates, agendas and minutes are posted on the school website.

The school provides parents of students with timely information about the school's programs.   How does the school provide the information?

The Point Loma News ‘eblast” informs parents of all meetings of interest.

PLHS maintains a school website www.pointlomahigh.com where meeting information and training opportunities are posted.

PLHS updates information via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram on a regular basis.

The school provides parents with an explanation of the curriculum used at the school, the assessments used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet. How does the school provide the information?

Parents are notified annually of individual student assessment results by the Research and Evaluation Department. An explanation of the report is available in several languages.

Teachers make available course syllabi for all students and families. Course syllabi outline course content and performance standards, expect student learning outcomes, types of assessment and grade determination information.

If requested by parents, the school provides opportunities for parents to participate in decisions relating to the education of their children.  How does the school provide the opportunities?

Parents are invited to participate in the SSC, ELAC, Pointer Association, Coffee with the Counselors, and additional parent workshops throughout the school year.

Point Loma High School distributes to parents a Home-School compact. The compact, which has been jointly developed with parents, outlines how parents, the entire school staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement.  It describes specific ways the school and families will partner to help children achieve the State’s high academic standards.

  • The school’s responsibility is to provide high-quality curriculum and instruction.
  • The ways parents will be responsible for supporting their children’s learning.
  • The importance of ongoing communication between parents and teachers through, at a minimum, annual parent-teacher conferences; frequent reports on student progress; access to staff; opportunities for parents to volunteer and participate in their child’s class; and opportunities to observe classroom activities.

PLHS worked within the SSC to create the Home-School Compact.

This compact is given to all parents at the beginning of the year as part of the new school year registration process. It is also included in the student handbook and on the school website.

The school provides parents with materials and training to help them work with their children to improve their children's achievement.

Our counseling department schedules quarterly “Coffee with the Counselors” to assist parents with their student achievement.

In February, all parents of 10th grade students are invited to a 10th Grade Parent Night. Counselors guide parents through the process of interpreting PSAT results and provide information regarding the 4-year plan and planning for post-secondary options.

New families are invited to attend a meeting in January, “Picture Yourself a Pointer” to learn more about Point Loma High School and the educational programs available to all students.

The school educates staff members in the value of parent contributions, and in how to work with parents as equal partners.

On-going professional development provides staff members with strategies to include parents as partners in the education process.

The school coordinates and integrates parental involvement programs with other programs, and conducts other activities, such as parent resource centers, to encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children.

PLHS offers evenings for parents inclusive of topics such as: PSAT test results interpretation, the four-year academic plan, and financial aid night.

Our counseling center is open to parents with an area for parents to access and use computers at any time.

Monthly campus tours are held for interested potential new families. The campus tours provide information about PLHS programs and an opportunity for a Q&A with the principal.

The school distributes Information related to school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities to parents in a format and language that the parents understand.

PLHS distributes information related to school and parent programs in English and Spanish through callers, e-blast, website, and flyers.

Information is also disseminated during SSC, ELAC, IGC, and Pointers Association.

The school provides support for parental involvement activities requested by parents.

Information is disseminated in a format and language parents understand.

School personnel are available to provide translation for parents at parent involvement activities.

PLHS works with families before, during and after school. We encourage and welcome families to be involved. We have paid for parents to attend local conferences.

The school provides opportunities for the participation of all parents, including parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory students. Information and school reports are provided in a format and language that parents understand).

This policy was adopted by Point Loma High School on September 19, 2022 and will be in effect for the period of 2022-2023 school year.

The school will distribute the policy to all parents of students on, or before: November 1, 2022.
