According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the leading cause of death for Americans 15-20 years old is motor vehicle collisions. The California Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System reported teen drivers (ages15-19) are found at fault in 74 percent of all fatal collisions that they are involved in, although they only represent 3.7 percent of the state's licensed drivers.

Start Smart is a free class offered statewide to current and prospective teenage drivers and their parents/guardians. Thais two hour, no cost class discusses important issues such as:
• Tips to avoid collisions
•Safe driving habits
•Dynamics of a collision
•Consequences of a poor choice behind the wheel of a vehicle
•Testimonies of people tragically impacted by incidents involving teen drivers
•Parental roles and responsibilities
•Legal ramifications and civil liabilities affecting teen drivers and their parents

Reservations are now closed with 120 registrants. A second session is being considered, info to follow. RSVP's were sent to [email protected].

What is the Start Smart Program?

The California Highway Patrol's Start Smart program is a driver safety education class for new and future licensed teenage drivers between the age of 15 - 19 and their parents/guardians.

CHP officers will discuss traffic collision avoidance techniques, collision causing factors, driver/parent responsibilities, and seatbelt usage. Additionally, testimonies will be provided by officers who have investigated fatal collisions involving teens, and by family members who have lost love ones
in traffic collisions.
