Through learning to communicate in a second (or third or fourth) language, you will learn wonders about the world and yourselves. The World Language Department at PLHS is committed to helping students develop and maintain proficiency in a language other than English. This class will follow the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning as well as the California State Frameworks for Foreign Language. We will work towards proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and cultures. Coursework will be in the context of the Five Cs for foreign language education: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities. Learning a language can be challenging, but also fun! Students should come prepared to make an effort to speak, make mistakes, work on pronunciation, in a safe environment, where the teacher understands that effort is paramount and mistakes are expected when one is attempting to speak in a foreign language. Errors in pronunciation are expected as the student is learning to make new sounds and create new words. The more a student speaks the more they will be able to make new sounds and say new words. Expectations are the same in all levels. Objectives and goals vary on the level and the chapters as difficulty increases, as the student advances.
