55:47 Literature in Stones: Petroglyphs as Literature
American Lit classes traditionally begin with the coming of the European after a very brief offering of Native American "folktales." Yet rich well organized cultures existed in the Western Hemisphere long before Europe's development, cultures which did not live in isolation but had lively intercourse across oceans as is evidenced by petroglyphs and excavated structures. Mrs. Tchaiko Kwayana's American Lit class is a deliberate departure from traditional models which by ignoring Antiquity reinforces the racial stereotypes that continue to keep the world ignorant of the powerful history of non-European peoples. Mrs. Merritt, who has led youth in fossil finds on the site of the Malcolm X Library in San Diego, with her husband, Dr. Anta Merritt, travels widely studying antiquity's wonders.
