Dr. Jeff Sullivan, Dept of Kinesiology

Point Loma Nazarene University

The partnership between PLHS and Point Loma Nazarene University goes back almost 20 years during the last few years of coach Bennie Edens.  Back then, Jeff Sullivan was the ATC covering Pointer football. Now that Dr. Sullivan is Director of the Athletic Training Program at PLNU and Chair of the Kinesiology department, he thought that reestablishing the relationship with PLHS would be beneficial to both parties! This clearly has been the case: PLHS student athletes receive high-quality care from an alumna of the PLNU AT program (Ryan Nokes, Head ATC & Delaney Cassidy Associate ATC) and the current students at PLNU shadow Ryan and help to provide care for Pointer athletes in a state-of-the-art sports medicine clinic which serves as a "clinical laboratory" for them to learn the profession of athletic training.  These students allow the ATCs to provide care for more student-athletes during practice times and games with a variety of sports.

Dr. Sullivan credits the progress and advancement of the sports medicine program at PLHS directly to the Protect Our Pointers (POP) committee, and specifically to Eleanor Snyder.   They have been great advocates for athletic training and champions for increasing
quality healthcare to PLHS student-athletes. We at PLNU share this desire and want to advocate for the protection of student-athletes in our community wherever we can.  In working with the administration of PLHS over the past 5 years, we have had pretty remarkable success with expanding the services offered to student-athletes, as well as building the new sports medicine facility that is the envy of the district.  The partnership is a blessing to PLNU and our students and we look forward to continuing to work with our sister school in the neighborhood."

In addition to offering the Athletic Training Education program, PLNU's Kinesiology department prepares students for careers in physical therapy, physician assistant, chiropractic, strength and conditioning, performance enhancement, teaching and coaching.  "We have recently enjoyed enrolling some of the student-athletes from PLHS into our program because they were influenced as high school athletes by PLNU students; I think the relationship will continue to benefit both programs in the future".
