Mr. Cawein - Room 101
(pronunciation: KAY-wine)
Integrated Math I / Integrated Math II
Hello parents and students! This is my second year at PLHS and my 5th in education. I have worked professionally in various jobs across many sectors (insurance, entertainment, games, hospitality - the list goes on!) and I bring a knowledge and understanding of life beyond high school that I love sharing with students. I am passionate about mathematics and about helping every student be their best. I am a high energy teacher and I love being a part of the PLHS family!
This year, both the IM1 and IM2 courses I teach will be primarily on paper. While computers and other tech do have a place in the classroom, for my class they will be used sparingly and with a specific sense of purpose. Students will be expected to keep a portfolio of all the work they have completed in this class, both as a display of their hard work and progress and as a tool for preparing for future coursework and this course's final.
Students can access all course information through our Canvas site. All students are automatically enrolled in this course when they are placed in my class. https://sandiegounified.instructure.com/ Students seeking additional practice opportunities beyond the work provided in class can find it here, as assignments called Daily Delta.
Grades can be accessed through PowerSchool. I update grades as quickly as possible so parents can rely on my grades to accurately reflect their student's progress. https://powerschool.sandi.net/public Portfolio grades are updated as they are taken, while check-in and Unit Test grades are input within a week of completion. More details on all of this can be found in this year's syllabus which is attached below.
If you need to reach me for any reason, please email me at [email protected].
In addition to these math classes, I also am the sponsor teacher for Point Loma's offering of the American Math Competition 10/12 (AMC10/12) hosted in November. I will be looking for driven students who would like to test their mettle with some of the most intersting and challenging problems available. This year I will also be joining our incredible Academic Team as an assistant coaching, hoping to help the team build on their outstanding performance last school year.
I am looking forward to a great year! ~Mr. Cawein
