Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Spanish 1-2 is intended to provide you with a basic proficiency in four areas of communication:  reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension. Culture will also be emphasized as you compare and contrast the different civilizations, accents, and traditions of the Spanish-speaking world. Spanish 1-2 is a beginning level course designed for novice learners.  The present tense of speaking is covered in the first year, other tenses are in 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8 classes.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES: 

By the end of this course, novice learners will be able to do the following:

Recite the Spanish alphabet                                       Describe clothing / Identify colors           

Use cognates to understand meaning                        Pronounce Spanish vowels correctly

Exchange greetings/introductions                               Use numbers and tell time

Today the students proof read their essays on "Mi Familia." Make the essays meet the following requirements:
-Size 12, Times New Roman font
-1" margins all around
-The entire document is double spaced
-Upper left hand corner has First and Last Names, Date in Spanish el 9 de mayo de 2019, and Period in Spanish as Periodo 
-The title. Mi Familia is centered
-Each paragraph is indented (use Tab key to indent)
-Capitalize only the first letters of sentences and proper nouns
 
-The 3 paragraph essay must be about 4 people, & one paragraph must be about 2 people
-The 1st item of the paragraph describes the names of the relatives using se llama for 1 person and se llaman for 2 people
-The 2nd item of the paragraph states where the relative or relatives are from by using es de for 1 person or son de for 2 people
-The 3rd item of the paragraph details the physical descriptions with three physical descriptions per person
-Change all adjectives to match with the nouns they describe in gender & number (singular/plural)
-Use tener when describing los ojos and el pelo. The conjugations are tiene and tienen
-Use ser when describing physical descriptions (except when expressing the eyes & hair a person has). The conjugations are es and son
-The 4th item of the paragraph details the personality descriptions with three personality descriptions per person
-Change all adjectives to match with the nouns they describe in gender & number (singular/plural)

The students continued their work on their electronic presentations on Google Slides after they reviewed their essays and made the necessary corrections on them.  Follow the attached guide when designing your electronic presentation.
 
Presentations are next week. You cannot use notes to read from during your presentation. Images with text are not allowed in the electronic presentation, unless it is the image that describes where the person is from.

Hola clase, Today we reviewed our assignments from last Thursday and Friday. We also dedicated time in class to complete our assignments since the 18th of April. Tomorrow we will organize our classwork to create a work packet that will be turned in on Wednesday May 8.  Tomorrow we will also have a practice vocabulary test for the actual test that we'l have on Wednesday the 8th of May.
 
On Thursday and Friday of this week we will type put our essay on Mi Familia that we wrote in the first semester. We will memorize and present these essays on Mi Familia during in 2 weeks during block schedule days.

From a PowerPoint we took notes on the verb IR which means to go. We copied the different conjugations and wrote 13 sentences with the verb IR in them and wrote the Spanish translations for these sentences as well.

The printed typed dialogs are due at the end of class tomorrow.  The sceneries are due at the end of class on Friday, March 8. Do not take any of the sriting work out of the classroom, your group will lose all credit for this project if your writing drafts leave the classroom.

Feliz miércoles. Today we began work for our group project which is to write memorize and present an original dialog about a problem, with a solution, related to school.  We will spend the next few days working on this project. Here are the due dates:
MARCH 1: Rough Draft is due
MARCH 6: Final typed copy and scenery design are due
MARCH 14: Presentation of the memorized dialogs in class
 
All writing work for the dialogs must remain in class, and cannot be taken out of the classroom.  Doing so will result in the loss of all points for this project. Electronics and their accessories of any kind are not allowed during the writing of this project, unless I advise.  Having these items out during the writing of this project will result in the total loos of all points for this project.

Hola clase, We reviewed notes on subject pronouns in Spanish. The nine subject pronouns that we are responsible to know are: yo, tú, él, ella, usted, nosotros, nosotras, ellos, ellas, ustedes. We also reviewed notes on the verb ser which means to be in English.  The five forms (conjugations) of the verb ser that we're responsible to know are: soy, eres, es, somos, son.  We highlighted or underlined the subject pronouns and their English meanings and the different conjugations of the verb ser and their English equivalents.

Some groups began typing their dialogs on the classroom laptops and drawing their scenery.  The scenery designs must stay in the classroom.  Groups may take their types copy of the dialogs home to practice and memorize.

We received the new vocabulary list called Lección Preliminar: Numbers, Days, Weather and we reviewed the new terms in class.  Study the vocabulary at home for 20 minutes everyday including weekends.  At home draw pictures that represent the 15 vocabulary terms on the back of he vocabulary list.
 
We also worked on the textbook class assignment on exchanging telephone numbers, basic arithmetic in Spanish, the days of the week and expressing the weather.  Tomorrow we will review today's classwork. Bringing your textbook to class on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (unless I advise otherwise) is important.  Not having your Spanish textbook with you when we work will put you at a disadvantage.  
 
Make sure to save all of your Spanish materials in a 2 pocket folder that is used only for Spanish class.
 
Make ups for yesterday's test is today afterschool in our classroom. Bring your work packet to turn in for credit today afterschool as well.  If the test is not made up today afterschool, then the test grade becomes zero and it cannot be made up.  This is your only opportunity to make up this test and turn in your assignments.

Today we reviewed yesterday's class activity on dialogs, greetings and farewells, and about New York's Hispanic Day Festival.  We also made corrections to it. Remember that if an assignment that we reviewed in class has mistakes on it when the work is collected, then points will be taken off of that assignment.  Make corrections to all of your work when we review the material.  That is your opportunity to clarify any concerns you have about the work we do.

Hola, Today we began our work on the alphabet in Spanish with the packet called El alfabeto español.
 
Study all of the letters of el alfabeto español.  We will be tested on all of the 30 letters on Tuesday, September 4. On that assessment you will be asked to recall 5 randomly chosen letters in Spanish.  
Here's a song that you can use to better help you recall all of the letters of the Spanish alphabet.  It is called Spanish alphabet song (military style) by Barbara MacAurthur on YouTube. Listen and sing along with the song to help you study the letters in Spanish.
