Sports Medicine Internship (Period 5)
Course Description
This class serves as a “capstone” course after Anatomy and Physiology and Sports Medicine 1,2 for those interested in pursuing a career in the medical field, particularly sports medicine/athletic training. Instruction will include, but is not limited to: in-depth whole body anatomy and physiology, learning and understanding the processes behind injury treatment, management, and healing, as well as the medical terminology used in health care. Students will learn evaluation techniques for common diseases and injuries, along with strategies for rehabilitation and recovery. Hands on activities are incorporated through-out the course and all students will be given the opportunity to attend field trips or observe guest speakers associated with different health care fields. This course will incorporate internships in an effort to allow students exposure to numerous health care professions. These internships may be on or off-campus and may take place during or after school hours. The exact internship placement for each student will be agreed upon by a group of people including: the student, his/her parents, the teacher, the principal, and the potential job supervisor. Internships are a privilege, not a right. With this experience, however, graduating seniors will develop an impressive repertoire for any college application. The hands-on involvement and internships will be beneficial for any student interested in pursuing a career in the medical field, whether it be directly after high school or through a college or university.
