  1. Take the Healthy Kids Survey. CLICK HERE
  2. This survey asks about your behavior, experiences, and attitudes related to health, well–being, and schooling. It includes questions about use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; bullying and violence; and what you do at school and how you feel about it. You do not have to answer these questions, but your answers will be very helpful in improving school and health programs. You will be able to answer whether or not you have done or experienced any of these things. This survey asks about things you may have done during different periods of time, such as during your lifetime (for example, did you ever do something?), or the past 12 months, or 30 days. Each provides different information. Please pay careful attention to these time periods. Please answer the following questions to the best of your ability. Press the button below to begin the survey.

Tues. 5/1/18-Thurs. 5/3/18

Essay first draft due Friday May 4th in PowerSchool
(AT THE LATEST BY 7:30am Monday May 7th in Google Classroom AND turnitin.com)
Go to turnitin.com
Create an account
class ID: 18026369
Key: English
You essay needs to have a green similarity score:
  • green (one matching word - 24% similarity index)
  • yellow (25-49% similarity)
  • orange (50-74% similarity)
  • red (75-100% similarity)
You should be coming to the end of your essay, which means you'll soon be writing the CONCLUSION. Be sure your conclusion:
  • Restates and emphasizes your thesis/claim
  • Provides the "so what?" -- explains why this argument is relevant to you and the world around you
Goal: Work on adding evidence to your essay. Focus on correctly quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing the words of others with citations.

Body Paragraphs
Before you move on to your body paragraphs, reread your intro and make sure you:
  • Made it very clear whether you agree or disagree with the quote you chose
  • Related the quote to extreme sports and risk taking behavior
Now it's time to prove your claim. Consider what subclaims (reasons) you will present in your essay. You will likely need at least one paragraph to present each subclaim. You will also need evidence to support each subclaim. Your evidence will come from the extreme sports articles we read in class.
The evidence that you pull from the articles must be quoted. For example:
  •  Direct quotation: In “Extreme Sports Not About Risk-taking: Study,”Dr. Brymer found that people who participate in extreme sports have an image of “risk takers and adrenaline junkies”. He found this really isn’t true.
The only evidence that can be paraphrased or summarized is the Everest Documentary.

1 BODY PARAGRAPH MUST INCLUDE A COUNTERARGUMENT/DEVIL'S ADVOCATE:
As you continue to write the body of your essay, make sure you include an opposing viewpoint/counterargument. Remember, this is the opposite side of the argument, what someone who disagrees with you might say. Below are some sentence frames to help you introduce an opposing viewpoint and counterargument:
  • Some people may argue...
  • On the other hand, __________ believes that...
Most importantly, once you bring up an opposing view, you MUST refute it (prove it wrong). Below are some frames to help you refute the opposing view:
  • However, they are incorrect because...
  • This is a valid point, but...
Objections and Counter-Arguments: One of the paragraphs in your essay should start like this:
     Introducing objections: Opposing viewpoints:
  • Some people may say that _______________.
  • Critics might argue that __________________.
  • I know some people will think _________________.
  • There are people who would disagree because _______________.
  • Those who have never tried ____________ might (think/say/argue) that ________________.
Addressing opposing viewpoints with counter arguments:
  • These critics haven't considered ______________________.
  • When you know more about ________________...
  • Doubters should see how____________________...
  • To say that _____________ is an exaggeration of_________________.
  • While it is true that ___________________, it does not necessarily mean that________________.

Mon. 4/30/18

Essay first draft due Friday May 4th.
We will be writing an essay about the Extreme Sports Unit:
Write an argumentative position paper related to our study of extreme sports and other risk-taking behaviors.
Examine and annotate a mentor text:
Example introduction paragraph:
Draft your introduction paragraph in your ENGLISH JOURNAL.
We will share aloud tomorrow.
Writing your thesis can be the most important, yet challenging part of your essay. It provides the reader with a claim that you intend on proving with the evidence presented in the rest of your essay. Some of the frames below will help you to write a very basic thesis statement. Challenge yourself to take your thesis a step further, like the one in the mentor text above.
  • I agree/disagree with __________________________’s quote because…
  • While some may disagree with ________________’s quote, I relate to it because…
  • I agree/disagree with ___________________’s quote. There are times when unnecessary risk is not acceptable because…
**Don't forget to explain how your quote relates to the subject of extreme sports!!
