COURSE SYLLABUS SPANISH 1-2señor SánchezCourse Title: Spanish 1-2 Books: Avancemos 1 textbookTeacher: Dario Sanchez Email: [email protected]Room: Room 254 Phone: (619) 650-5000 x 2804¡BIENVENIDO A LA CLASE DE ESPAÑOL!Welcome to Spanish class!OVERVIEW We live in an ever-changing, interdependent world in which diverse cultures and languages come together. New language learning should involve interaction with others; whether they are on another continent, across town, or within the neighborhood. To study a language means not only to study its words and grammar but also the culture in which it is used. “Knowing how, when, and why to say what to whom” is the key to good communication and is the primary objective of my classes.CLASS DESCRIPTION Spanish 1-2 provides a basic proficiency in four areas of communication: reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension. Culture will also be emphasized as you compare and contrast the different civilizations, accents, and traditions of the Spanish-speaking world. Spanish 1-2 is a beginning level course designed for novice learners. Our goal is for students to acquire Spanish by focusing on high frequency words and structures. Students will be actively engaged and will be expected to participate voluntarily and when called upon.COURSE OBJECTIVES The present tense and the basic future tense are covered in this first year class. By the end of this course, novice learners will be able to do the following:Recite the Spanish alphabet Describe clothing / Identify colorsUse cognates to understand meaning Conjugate verbs in the present tenseExchange greetings/introductionsUse numbers and tell timeIdentify the Spanish-speaking countries& their capitalsSay what one has to doExpress likes and dislikesDescribe people Exchange informationIdentify certain Sports/ProfessionsDescribe weatherAsk and answer questionsExpress where people are goingCOURSE STANDARDS The World Language Department at Point Loma High School follows the Foreign Language Framework for California Public Schools, which may be accessed online at the following link http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cr/cf/documents/foreignlangfrmwrk.pdfGRADING The grades are based on classwork which is 30% of the grade. Tests, quizzes and projects make up the remaining 70% of the grade.CLASSWORK: 30% Classwork is due either on the day it is assigned or the following day. We review the work in class, which is the opportunity the students have to check their work and make the necessary corrections. The students are responsible for saving their classwork in their two pocket folders until they are collected for recording in the gradebook for credit. The assignments are collected about every two to three weeks. The classwork, in the form of work packets, is usually collected on the day of an assessment or project. On the day before assignment collection, the students will organize their work in chronological order and staple the pages together to create a work packet. The work packets are collected the following day before a test or project is begun. Work packets are on time when they are turned in during class when the instructor asks for them. If a student was not able to turn in their work packet, they may still make arrangements to turn it in afterschool until five school days before the end of that assignment's grading period for credit. If a student has a verified absence on the day of an assessment or project, they can make up the missed project or assessment on the student's first day when they return back to class either before school or after school only.An unverified absence is similar to a truancy, where there is no verification from the student's guardians or parents that the students to excuse the studen's absence with the attendance office. The following factors are practices of successful students:Actively listening with an intent to understandSignaling when you don’t understand and when you need the teacher to slow downMaintaining a positive attitude toward class activities and toward classmatesResponding appropriately to teacher cues by doing gestures, contributing answers/ideasResponding to statements/questions with short answers and full sentencesBeing present every day with all materials, seated and ready to work when the bell ringsKeeping a folder for Spanish work organized and accessibleHaving nothing on desk or lap unless the teacher has specified otherwiseNot having phone nor earphones out during classNot consuming food nor drinks in classNot holding hold side conversations or blurting outHaving a phone and earphones out during class prevents a student from being completely engaged in class. Keep your phone and accessories out of view and secured inside your backpack.TESTS, QUIZZES, & PROJECTS, 70% The majority of the students’ grades are based on assessments and projects. A practice test is given on the day before a test to give the students an idea of how they would poerform on the actual test. Students take the practice test observing the test taking behaviors to respect the test taking environment. Re-tests/test re-takes are not givien because the students are given the practice test. Students grade their own practice tests and are required to share their practice tests with their families. Students earn credit for taking the practice test and respecting the test taking environment.HOMEWORK It is helpful for students to study the focus structures/vocabulary each night to reinforce what is covered in class; therefore, the daily homework for this class is to study the Spanish vocabulary for 20 minutes every day including weekends and vacation days. Students can study our vocabulary on our class account on Quizlet.com. Each student has an account. You will know that you have studied enough when you are able to do the following:Read and hear each structure in Spanish and say/write what it means in English.Read and hear each structure in English and say/write what it means in Spanish.Manipulate the structure to create something new by using different verbs and subjectsIf students feel confident that they know the class structures, they may review past vocabulary lists, listen to Spanish language music, watch Spanish language media, read Spanish language texts, or practice duolingo.com for the remainder of their study time at home.WHAT DO I DO IF I NEED HELP?If you have questions about your performance in the class or need help, please speak to me to set up an appointment afterschool so that we can talk about it. If parents have questions about their student’s performance, please email me so that together we may work towards helping your student. Email: [email protected]MATERIALSStudents will need a two-pocket folder to keep their Spanish work. One pocket is for classwork, and the other pocket is for notes, practice tests and vocabulary lists. Students are expected to have lined paper as well for notes and other class activities. Please let señor Sanchez know if you are unable to acquire any materials so that they can be provided for you.SPANISH CLASS UPDATESClass activities and assignments are updated daily at: https://www.pointlomahigh.com/apps/classes/1029514/assignments/You may subscribe to receive regular updates of our classwork and activities. Hola clase (hello class), In our third day of Spanish class, we reviewed the structure of the class. Here are a few important items from today's class:
- Students will need a 2 pocket folder to keep all of their classwork. One side is for vocabulary lists, notes, and tests. The other pocket is for class work and the occasional homework.
- Students should have received the class textbook, Avancemos, Uno, published by MacDougal Littell. Students should keep their textbooks in their lockers and bring them to class, or take them home, when needed. The digital copy of the textbook is provided in these class postings.
- Students are required to study their vocabulary everyday for 20 minutes, including weekends and holidays, in order to strengthen their vocabulary skills.
- Students will use the many learning and study activities to help them learn their vocabulary through Quizlet.com.
- Assessments are every 2-3 weeks. On the class day before each assessment we will organize our class assignments and staple them to create a work packet that will be turned on the following day for credit. No credit will be given to incomplete assignments, nor to assignments that have not been thoughtfully completed.
- Practice assessments are given on the day before an actual assessment. Students will respect the practice assessment as if it were the actual assessment. Respect the test taking environment. Students will grade their own assessments and keep that assessment to better give them an idea on how they will do on the actual assessment on the following school day. Students are required to share their practice assessment scores with their families.
- Students are required to take risks and speak in front of their classmates and teacher. Listening, reading and writing in Spanish are be practiced daily as well.
- Srtudents should have an account on Quizlet.com to organize and study their vocaulary lists.
- All students should have access to the their vocabulary lists in Quizlet. Students should study their vocabulary everyday for at least 20 minutes in order to develop a strong foundation of learning Spanish.
