Good Morning AP Chem,

Well this is it, the last post I will be giving you this year. I am super proud of all of you hanging in there and attacking the AP exam. This has not been an easy situation.

I'm sorry that our school year was cut short, we still had a couple of fun labs to do :(

Please take your time with this last assignment, it is posted on the GC, along with attendance instructions on the stream. The information in this assignment is important and keep in mind, we really didn't even talk much about methane. It has a better ability to absorb infrared than carbon dioxide. Scientists figure the amount of methane that will be released from thawing permafrost will be disastrous. So, we have to work to keep the global temperature down and we all have to do our part. This isn't a hoax, this is reality.

I hope you all have a somewhat normal summer and hopefully we can say hi face to face next school year.

Hello AP Chem,

I apologize for not posting to this website on Tuesday, I could not get it to work all day!

As many of you see I have posted on the GC stream for you to comment for attendance purposes I have also uploaded a second assignment about Climate Science. These lessons are not mandatory, but I will put them into the grade book in the lab category. If you don't turn it in I will leave the score blank, that means it won't count for or against you. I will post 3 more lessons next week and then that will be it!

I'm going to input the Progress Check grades today, they were mandatory. As I finalize your semester grades I will be looking at your ap exam responses if you are in the middle of a grade bracket, ie 85% to decide how I will proceed. Nevertheless, I'm going to round and give everyone an extra 2%.

I am not going to be adding your exam "score" to the grade book. After this testing situation I have no idea how they are going to score your exams, meaning their curve. They have not provided scoring rubrics for the questions and so I can't be certain that my scoring will match theirs. I don't want to give anyone false ideas one way or the other. We will all have to wait until July 15 to get your scores! But I will use your responses if you are sitting on the fence with your grade.

Email me if you have any questions. I can't believe we are almost done! What is school going to look like next year? From your comments it looks like very few of you would like to go to school 5 days a week. We will see...

Good Morning AP Chem,

Congratulations to all of you! I'm sorry to those of you who experienced technical difficulties. It was not your fault and it must have been a huge disappointment. You have 48 hours to request a make up exam. If you had any technical glitches please consider taking the exam again in June. But if you do need to take it again, leave the Chemistry alone until after Memorial Day weekend. You need a rest from Chemistry.

I am going to mark everybody present today for attendance because the vast majority of you took the AP exam yesterday.

I will not be assigning anything academically until after the Memorial Day weekend, then we will do some climate science.

I will post to the GC stream on Monday that you will need to comment on at some point next week for attendance purposes. Otherwise I'm signing off for the next week, but I will be checking my email.

I'm super proud of all of you, you truly are warriors during this very difficult time :)

You might want to get your notes handy about assigning oxidation state, 10/15.

After you check in at 10:30 and are waiting impatiently for the first question to appear, go over your ion cards and read the purpose for each lab in your lab notebook. This will take your mind off your misery

This last FRQ is one that you have done before! You can do more FRQ's if you want, but it's time to start winding down the intense studying, no need for last minute panic! Read through your Princeton Review casually, know where all the information can be found. Read over your lab notebook, try to understand what you've done in each lab.

Hello Chemistry Warriors!

You are almost there. No FRQ's today, you review whatever you need to.

Gather your testing materials, make sure you have labeled your answer sheets, if you are going to use a document it needs to be properly labeled as well.

The word from the district office is that the testing website was lagging for copy and paste. If you are going to use that route to submit, be prepared for some lag and give yourself the full 5 minutes to get your answer submitted. Don't try to keep working until you have one minute left! That goes for everybody, stop working when the timer says 5 minutes left and get your answers submitted.

Prepare yourself for the fact that this test is going to be DIFFICULT. I have tried to provide you with lots of FRQ's so that you have a good sense about how questions are asked. Remember, your questions tomorrow will have more parts than you can answer. That's good! Pick and choose what you want to answer. Read the entire question first, then get busy.

Stop studying by 7 pm this evening. Relax, if you don't know it by then you aren't going to learn it!

Please think of this testing situation as a learning experience. You have worked hard to prepare to have this experience. Try to enjoy it, I'm not kidding. Very few people have this opportunity and you have provided this for yourself. Be proud of you :) Grit goes a lot farther in this world than a high IQ....

I'm going to post a new assignment to the GC. You need to submit a photo of 2014 #1. I will be looking for legibility. Write dark, label answers clearly, and box the final answer for calculations. We talked about different ways of submitting phone photos during Zoom, they are:

1. Email yourself the photo as an attachment. Open the email on your computer, download the attachment to your desktop, choose the photo to submit.

2. If both devices are Apple products, airdrop from phone to computer.

3. If the devices are Android, you can use your phone like a thumbdrive.

4. Save the photo to your google drive and then access the google drive on your computer.

Weekend FRQ's Remember, you are doing YOUR best to learn as much Chemistry as possible! Try to remain focused, it's almost over.

Thanks to all who joined the Zoom yesterday. It was good to see everyone and I hope it was useful for you. Tomorrow I will post the methods for getting your answer photo to your computer desktop, along with the resources you should have on hand during test taking. Today I want to focus on your devices.

I cannot get an embedded link to the test demo to work. So please, type cb.org/apdemo into your browser to get there. If you can't get the page to load that means your device as it is configured will not allow you to test. Update your Chrome browser and make sure it is your default browser.

IMPORTANT! Today and tomorrow you can still check out a chromebook from the school district. All you need is your school ID. Tomorrow is the last day they will be checking computers out. Go to https://sites.google.com/sandi.net/instructionalcontinuityit/technology-support-for-families to find the nearest location for pick up. There is no distribution at Pt Loma High. If you are having trouble with your computer I suggest you check one out. You don't have to use it, but at least you've got it in case you can't get your tech figured out!

Today you will do 2017, everything except 3c,d,e and 7. This is about 1 hour of answering. Try to answer everything first, before you look at the scoring guidelines. At least complete one question before you score it. Read the entire question before beginning. This practice is tedious, I know!!!

Attached is net ionic equation practice that goes in the center of your lab notebook. #20 is a combination and also a redox.

As many of you have noticed the AP classroom has FRQ's associated with the progress checks for each unit. I'm going to assign them tomorrow so they are easy to find. I will not be counting them as problem sets. I would like you to read them over, answer them if you'd like, and send them to me if you want to. You don't get to see a scoring rubric, which isn't very helpful for you and why I haven't assigned them already. The big thing I want you to keep in mind as you are looking them over is that many of them have a text field for you to type into. Your EXAM will NOT, don't get confused by this.

Look for your tech practice exam info and test confirmation email today. I was mistaken, this is not going to be an AP Chem practice exam, bummer! This is only going to be a practice for your tech, all subject areas have the same test "demo." Super frustrating :( It doesn't look like there's going to be a specific chem practice.

Great job to the 50 or so of you that continue to do the Progress Checks. It is how I take attendance and they will count as problem sets.

I have unlocked progress check 7, equilibrium. This is the last one. Don't get discouraged if you aren't doing as well as you'd like, they are difficult, just keep plugging along.

It would appear that college board did not send you the testing guide. I have attached it again. READ the ENTIRE document. Share it with your parents so they know how to support you.

On Monday college board is unlocking a practice exam cb.org/apdemo as well as sending you an exam confirmation email. People you NEED to do the practice exam. You don't have to do it Monday, but shortly thereafter. It is the ONLY way you can sort out your technology and make sure it works. They will send you an email when it's unlocked.

Finally, you need to spend the weekend with the Princeton Review. Read everything (I'm not kidding.) You aren't responsible for Big Idea #3 galvanic and electrolytic cells. Big Idea #5 entropy, free energy, voltage and favorability. Big Idea #6 stop when you get to Ka, Kb. Everything else is fair game.

OK, that's plenty for now. Please spread the word about the testing guide, many people are not reading these posts. I miss you all and wish we were going through this together face to face. We will Zoom next Wed at 2 for Q and A. I will post the ID Wed morning.

Hello AP Chem,

I have unlocked Progress Check 6, thermochem, on the AP classroom. Before you start it please complete the attached worksheet about thermal equilibrium and heat capacity. It is an assignment that I usually give on a sub day, but didn't get the chance this year. The answers are on the last page of the document, but try to do it on your own first. Also, after the worksheet, review your notes and Princeton Review Big Idea #5 before trying the Progress Check.

Yesterday I received a pdf from College Board about testing details. If you did not receive this 51 page pdf (mostly graphics, don't worry) email me so I can post it for all of you. You have to thoroughly familiarize yourself with everything in the document. They are uploading a practice test on May 4, do it, I'm most worried about technical difficulties that you will encounter. The practice test will allow you to sort all that out.

Last day for exam refund is tomorrow.

Hello AP Chem,

Here are links for 3 FRQ's that I'd like you to complete today. Beginning today I'm going to give you a time frame for each question. My advice is that you completely move through the question in the time frame and once time is up, score it, then start looking up information for parts that you didn't understand. Also, start making yourself a personalized "equations" sheet, notes that you can use during the actual AP exam. You are going to need to be very smart and organized about the information you want handy in the midst of the exam. The time is going to go fast during testing!

Remember, you can never do too much FRQ to prepare for this exam. Do other problems in the links that I am providing. Practice makes... better :)
