One of the ways to tell someone to do or not to do something is to use the command forms.

 

Part 1. When you want to say “let’s do something” or “Let’s not do something” you use nosotros commands. Remember to start with the present tense of the yo verb and drop the final –o and add the appropriate ending.

 

For Nosotros commands add:

-emos for –ar verbs

-amos for -er and –ir verbs

 

Example:

Participemos en la campaña para mejorar la ciudad.

Let’s participate in the campaign to improve our city.

 

Part 2. If a verb has an irregular yo form it also appears in the nosotros command.

 

Example with the irregular yo form:

Siempre digo la verdad sobre los problemas de nuestra ciudad.

I always tell the truth about the problems in our city.

 

Example with the nosotros command form:

Digamos la verdad sobre los problemas de nuestra ciudad.

Let’s tell the truth about the problems in our city.

 

Part 3. Some verbs are irregular in the nosotros command form, and are not created using the yo form.

Part 4. Besides the command form, you already know another way to say let’s do something by incorporating ir + a + infinitive verb:

Vamos a luchar contra el prejuicio de nuestra ciudad.

 

To say let’s not do something you must use no + nosotros command:

Example:

No olvidemos a los ancianos ni a los enfermos.

 

Part 5. With reflexive verbs, you  drop the final s of the command form before attaching the reflexive pronoun nos:

Levantémonos (Notice the accent is added to the third to last syllable to keep the pronunciation consistent)

From the five different online galleries of this exhibit (September 11, 1973, Aftermath, Organized Resistance, MEMCh, Arpilleras Today), you will choose one arpilla to write about. Detail the name of the online gallery where your chosen arpilla is located, the arpilla’s title, name of the arpillera (maker of the arpilla). Then in complete sentences in English, address the following points:

  1. Describe the scene detailed in the arpilla.
  2. What is the message of the arpilla?
  3. Explain how this arpilla fits within the context of the online gallery it is located.
  4. What two vocabulary terms from our unit, Unidad 2 Etapa 1, would be relevant to use when describing this arpilla in Spanish. How can these terms be used to the arpilla’s description?
  5. If you were a child of the arpillera who designed this arpilla, what major concerns would you encounter in your home life?

 

When emailing me, include the following in your email:

- Write in the subject for today’s email assignment, “18/5/20: Las Arpillas”

- An appropriate greeting in Spanish like “Estimado señor Sanchez” or “Hola señor Sanchez”

- Introduce yourself and your class period in Spanish. “Soy _____ de la clase de periodo ____”

- In English, explain the name of the online gallery where your chosen arpilla is located, the arpilla’s title, name of the arpillera (maker of the arpilla).

- Then continue with your original responses to today’s assignment in English. Do not translate the names of the arpillas nor the arpilleras.

- Finally end your email with an appropriate closure like, “Gracias,” or “Atentamente,” then type your first and last name in the line underneath.

One of the ways to tell someone to do or not to do something is to use the command forms.

 

Part 1. The Ud. and Uds. Command forms are all formed by taking the yo form of a verb, dropping the ‘o and adding the appropriate endings.

For Ud. commands add:

-e for –ar verbs

-a for -er and –ir verbs

-en for –ar verbs

-an for –er and –ir verbs

 

Examples:

El señor Aroyuelo cambia la bombilla en el desván.

Mr. Arroyuelo changes the lightbulb in the attic.

 

Sr. Arroyuelo, por favor cambie la bombilla.

Mr. Arroyuelo, please change the lightbulb.

 

Part 2. The tú command has a different form for negative commands.

Regular (positive) tú commands look just like the third person indicative:

For negative tú commands add:

-a for –ar verbs

-e for -er and –ir verbs

-es for –ar verbs

-as for –er and –ir verbs

 

Examples:

Come este dulce.

Eat this candy.

 

No comas ese dulce.

Don’t eat that candy.

 

Part 3. If the stem of a verb is irregular in the yo form, it will be irregular in the command form. The endings will be the same as regular commands.
