History
Dedicated in 1925, Point Loma High School is the third largest of 16 high schools in the San Diego Unified School District and carries a tradition of pride and excellence. Point Loma High boasts other notable graduates, who have made their marks in sports (David Wells of the Boston Red Sox), Hollywood (Marion Ross of "Happy Days"), education (San Diego school trustee John de Beck), politics (former San Diego City Councilmen Byron Wear and Bill Lowery), business (real estate mogul Malin Burnham) and art (glass artist Steve Correia, for whom Correia Middle School is named). Among the most famous is Don Larsen, class of '47, who pitched the only perfect game in World Series history, helping the New York Yankees defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1956 Fall Classic. The first graduating class consisted of seven students - three boys and four girls - who celebrated their commencement in Balboa Park.

Our Community.
Point Loma is a peninsula community. Because of its proximity to the water the area has a sport fishing industry, yacht clubs, and numerous military establishments. Point Loma is known for its historic Cabrillo lighthouse, spectacular ocean views, and various recreational activities. Nearly 67,000 residents live on "the Point," with houses ranging from multi-million dollar estates to small, single-family beach bungalows. Within the area are ten elementary schools (seven public, three private), two middle schools, and one senior high school. The success of Point Loma High School is a credit to the entire community. Parents, staff, community members, and alumni dedicate much of their time and energy to support the school.

Our Programs.
Point Loma is a four year comprehensive high school serving grades 9-12 with a wide range of courses, including fine academic programs, extensive elective offerings, and excellent extracurricular opportunities. Our ethnically diverse student population of approximately 2000 students who come primarily from the Point Loma community. Point Loma has received a six-year accreditation in May 2003, by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Our Students.
Approximately 35 percent come from a variety of neighborhoods to participate in specialized programs, such as, the Voluntary Ethnic Enrollment Program (VEEP), the Choice Program, the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) program or the Seminar Program.

Our Faculty.
We have over 100 fully credentialed faculty. Approximately 58 percent of our teachers have completed the equivalent of a master's degree or higher. We also have over 35 classified employees.

We believe parent communication is vital to student success and ehancing the high school experience. We work hard to communicate in several ways.

Our Facilities.
The compact campus is situated on 13.5 acres nestled in the Loma Portal section of Point Loma, an area of well-maintained homes and small businesses. The original school (dedicated in 1925) was first rebuilt in 1976, and a state of the art science facility was completed in 1994. Our library/media center is fully equipped with wireless and desktop computers with Internet access provided for online research. The Media Center houses a large collection of both reference and circulation books. All classrooms are computer capable.

Clubs / Actitivities / Student Life.
Point Loma serves a wide variety of student interests. Over 40 clubs and organizations operate yearly to keep students active and involved. These include: Academic League, Amnesty International, Animal Rights, Asian Club, AVID, Associated Student Body, Band, Bowling Club, California Scholastic Federation, Car Club, Cheerleading, Chess Club, Drama, Film Club, French Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Future Educators of America, Gay/Straight Alliance, Interact Club, Journalism, Key Club, MEChA, New Horizon Club, Journey Club, Music Honor Society, NJROTC, Poetry Society, Rifle Team, SAVY, Science Club, Snowboard Club, Speech Team, Students Against Drunk Driving, Surf Club, Teens Against Prejudice, Thespians, UMOJA, Yearbook and Youth For A Better World.

Exciting Intiatives.
Point Loma High School is embarking on many exciting intiatives including:

  - Project Light Speed:  Project Light Speed's mission is to engage, empower, educate and prepare mall students for the 21st Century and Global economy.  Phase 1 initiatives include Digital Learning and communication initiatives, including Web Lockers, Digital Classrooms, Parent Connection, Real Time School Web Site, Live Homework Help (online tutoring for students), Email Communication for Parents, Wireless Campus and the conversion of library to "ibrary". Phase 2 Initiatives include "A thru E".  A = Applications for all students, B = Broadband to every students home, C = Curriculum & Assessment (web based, real time, interactive, relevant content/context), D = Device for each student (laptop or other connected device) and E = Education for all (Teachers, Parents, Community).  - New Music Center:  Conversion of a vacant building into a state-of-the-art facility for PLHS’s vibrant and award-winning music program. The initiative is well underway as a joint project with the SDUSD. This facility will increase student and community access to the joy and intellectual benefit of music.
